CRB is a repository of all the creative things that float through my mind about the RPG Pathfinder. Two major features are random character generation and building characters based on the god they worship. Anything that seems like it adds to the creative aspects of the game will pop up from time to time, including location descriptions, adventure ideas and even short stories. CRB won't just be my own creativity, it will open the floor to anyone who has an idea sparked by what I present to you.

Character 93 - Danior Herne

I found this week’s character rather interesting and I had an idea for him the instant he was rolled up. I’ve done one other character from Lastwall and I really like the history the region has with the whispering tyrant. Seeing as the land is a constant battlefield, both to protect the land from outside incursion by the orcs of the Hold of Belzken and to guard what is believed to be the tyrant’s final resting place, the idea of knights went through my head. Although the charisma for the character was high enough to be a paladin we got neutral good and not lawful neutral as an alignment, so I went cavalier instead.

Danior Herne

Danior’s family came to Lastwall a few generations ago. His great grandfather built a business on importing the weapons and armor that the crusaders needed to defend the line from the orcish invaders. His grandfather and father would continue the tradition. It was assumed that Danior would as well, but his father passed on before he had grown into a man.

The business passed on to his father’s partners, which was all well and good because Danior didn’t have a head for it. Pricing and inventory was not the boy’s strong suit. Anything with numbers was beyond him, as the younger Herne turned out to be more than a little slow. Being a trader was never something the boy wanted anyway. He dreamed of being one of the knights he saw daily heading to the front, or to guard some other location important to the region’s defense.

It wasn’t just the knights. One of the things that Danior’s father left him before he died was a small shield that had been enchanted. The boy would use it to play knight every chance he got. Even though his mother told him that his father wasn’t one of the crusaders, Danior always imagined his father as a knight in a full suit of resplendent armor.

Not all the warriors on the front were knights. Some of them were mercenaries, hired to fill gaps in the defenses. One of them took a liking to the boy and started training him at an early age. He taught Danior how to swing a sword and carry a shield. The sword-for-hire also taught him how to make a deal for his services, to always be fair, and to always uphold your end of the bargain.

Things changed for Danior around his thirteenth birthday. Some tieflings are born with the outward traits that expose them as such. In Danior’s case he lived a normal childhood, but when he hit puberty his body changed. Whether it was from his mother’s side or his father’s, the blood of some abyssal creature flowed through his veins, deforming him.

At first Danior covered his body. He thought that if he could conceal himself in a suit of armor like the knights he could just pretend this wasn’t happening to him; that he was as perfect as they were. That never really worked, so eventually he ran off. He was turned away from the knighthood so he joined up with one of the mercenary bands.

Danior was only a decent fighter but he had a certain presence about him which helped to motivate others. And his visage could be quite intimidating, which he used to his advantage when he wasn’t trying to hide it from the world. But he was young and impressionable as well, and not every group of sellswords was like the man who showed him how to use a weapon back when he was a kid.

The mercenaries were nominally working for the government of Lastwall, usually doing missions that the knights saw as beneath them. The group had been tracking down an item that was deemed too dangerous to be left about, and it was in the hands of a young and reckless sorcerer. Danior was tasked with stealing it from the man, which he did, but no matter how he played it out after it always felt wrong.

Eventually, though, Danior’s talent and dedication to his homeland got noticed. A group of crusaders not officially tasked by the government approached him. Their order has been working to keep the creeping evil of the whispering tyrant locked away and thwart those who would try to unleash his power or follow in his footsteps.

Danior joined with the order and swore to defend Lastwall and the world from the insidious evil. But even with their acceptance, he is never sure he really belongs or even deserves that honor. He works hard to make them proud, but in every step he has his own doubts.

What became of your tiefling? What class do you think his life and stats led him down the road to? How did his father die? Why did he steal an object from a spellcaster? Who was his mercenary mentor?

Random Roll 93 - The Randomness

This week we have an interesting character to deal with. I tend not to dump stat personally and even when I feel a character should have a flaw I rarely go lower than an 8 in that attribute. The perils of random rolls is that you don’t really have that choice and this week we get a character with an extremely low stat. Between rolling and 8 and the racial negative, our tiefling has an intelligence of 6 making him not all that bright. Now we get to combine that with all the other information and see what we can get out of it. Probably not going to be a wizard though.

Gender: Male
Race: Tiefling (Foulspawn)
Human Ethnicity:  Varisian
Nationality: Lastwall
Age: 79
Height: 6’ 3”
Weight: 181
Alignment: Neutral Good

Str: 14
Dex: 12
Con:  12
Int: 6
Wis: 16
Cha: 16

Homeland: Frontier
Parents: Only your mother is alive.
Siblings: You have no siblings.
Circumstance of Birth: [Middle-Class Birth] You were born to the middle class, which includes merchants, artisans, and tradespeople. You likely grew up in a good-sized settlement, and one of your parents is likely associated with a guild or other trade organization. As a free person, you don't experience the bondage of serfdom or peasantry, but you also lack the privilege of the nobility.
Parent's Profession: Merchants
Major Childhood Event: [Magical Gift] When you were a child, you found, stole, or were given a magic item that gave you an extraordinary ability. You may have used this item for mischief, crime, or good. Since that time, magic items have always held a special fascination for you.

Influential Associate: [The Mercenary] With this person, there was always a cost. No deed was done making a trade for something of equal or greater value. Whether this individual's actions tended toward good, evil, or pure balance, he was always fair in his dealings. You respected this trait and it influenced your own philosophy.

Conflict: [Major Theft] You stole expensive items.
Conflict Subject: Spellcaster.
Conflict Motivation: Pressured or Manipulated.
Conflict Resolution: [Mixed Feelings] Sometimes you regret the conflict, but other times you feel as if you didn’t have a choice in the matter or that you made the right decision. Most of the time, you just avoid thinking about the conflict. Only you and maybe a select few people know of your involvement.
Deity/Religious Philosophy: Milani

Romantic Relationship(s): [Several Inconsequential Relationships] You have had many lovers but no long-lasting, meaningful relationships.
Drawback: [Self-Doubt] No matter what you do, it’s never good enough. You cannot help but see in your victories many little defeats and failures. If you were stronger, smarter, faster, or more powerful, maybe you could be better. However, stuck in the body and mind you have, you feel you’re destined to fail.

(Trait) Artisan
(Trait) Frontier-Forged
(Trait) Magical Talent
(Trait) Mercenary
(Trait) Merchant
(Trait) Talented Organizer
(Drawback) Doubt

In the comments give us your ideas for how to make this into a fully realized character? What class would this character take up? How did his father die? Why does he have no siblings? What made him take up worship of Milani? And don’t forget to stay tuned Friday when my background hits the CRB.

Character Exploration 61 - Erbreror Kalish

Another week gone by and another character background has taken form from random rolls. This week we had a very interesting tiefling with an incredibly low charisma who follows a deity of lies. His chosen patron also has authority in his wheel house and living in the land of Molthune to me that meant military authority. A decent strength and exceedingly high constitution and wisdom sold me on a melee fighter but also with a divine twist. I eventually chose inquisitor as this character’s class, with the Heresy inquisition. Adding his wisdom to bluff and intimidate really spoke to following the Infernal Duke of authority, hubris, and lies.

Erbreror Kalish

Being born into poverty was never the worst part of Erbreor’s life. Being serfs—tending the land of a Molthuni noble’s vineyard— meant that his family needed all the able bodied hands they could get. If he had been born in a city or to a more well-to-do family then they might have killed him at birth when they first saw his vestigial tail and red tinted skin. No being born poor is probably what allowed Erbreror to grow into a man of his own.

His childhood wasn’t easy. Being a tiefling was seen as a curse of some kind. He was bullied mercilessly by not only the other local kids but by his older brothers and sister as well. As his skin color took on a more devilish red and his tail began to become more than just a stump the bullying moved up from verbal to physical attacks. In one such attack from his own siblings part of the flesh of his cheek was torn away. And although he survived, the lack of a proper healer left him with a large open scar on his face.

When his younger brother was born he had hoped that some of his older siblings wrath would fall upon him but such was not the case. Well into his teens he was the butt of every joke, and a pin cushion for siblings physical jabs. It all came to a head on his fifteenth birthday when—having grown bigger and stronger—he tried to kill his eldest brother. Sadly though, he burned down the house killing his parents and his younger sibling in the process.

Erbreror ran from his childhood home, fleeing out into the badlands. He spent weeks living off the land, poorly. If it weren’t for his incredible health and will he wouldn’t have lasted a day let alone a week. When the mercenary group found him he was malnourished and near death. The red and black clad warriors fought for the Molthune in their war against Nirmathas.

Erbreror was fed and taken in. When asked about his life he lied. Although he was always able to get one over on the locals, the Mercenary leader could see right through him. But he smiled anyway. That was the beginning of Erbreror’s training. He learned lessons in both martial prowess and theological studies.

The company were defectors from Cheliax looking to earn their citizenship in Molthune. Like most of the diabolists they believed in a strict hierarchy and order. Unlike most of Cheliax Asmodeus was not their patron deity. The company of the burning wings in their red and black attire took the Infernal Duke Iaozrael as guiding light.

The young tiefling took the lessons of Iaozrael to heart and during an evening prayer with the troupe he was touched by the Infernal Duke. Erbreror’s new mission was to advance the growth of Iaozrael through the lands of Molthune and to hunt down those who have fallen away from the devil. He was also tasked with ingratiating himself into the actual army of Molthune and to offer his services to root out those who would work against the nation from within.

The one thing Erbreror was always good at was rooting out lies. So finding a way to make himself useful was pretty easy. He slowly worked his way up the ranks in the Imperial Army of Molthune. He even managed to dig up dirt on one of the regional commanders. He used this to settle himself into a position of quiet ease from which he could work his masters will. Although the commander was technically a traitor, giving information to a whore who was a spy for Nirmathas, allowing him to hold his position helped Erbreror root out other traitors.

Now Erbreror lives out his days as a ranking special agent in the Imperial Army of Molthune. He hunts those who would betray his home country and he seeks to further the small but growing church of Iaozrael. He revels in his auhtority and in his continued mastery of his silver tongue.

With an aura of command and a silver tongue comes Erbreor. But is this the character you would have made? What class would you have chosen? How did his parents die? Who were his childhood bullies? How did he come to worship Iaozrael? It’s never too late to let us know in the comments.

Erbreror came to life from a handful of random information, just like your games come to life aided by the content of providers like me.  Contributions to my Patreon or Paypal help me be able to invest more of that time into creation instead of worrying about keeping the lights on. Random Roll 61 - The Randomness

It's Monday so its time to flex out creative muscle. This week's randomly generated character is a tiefling from the war torn country of Molthune. A hell-spawn who follows the Infernal Duke of Authority, Hubris, and Lies. He's tough as nails and incredibly perceptive on both a physical and social level but between his hideous appearance and his attitude he lacks what anyone would call charisma. Bullied as a child, and both his parents now dead, social acceptance is the one thing he looks for. But will he ever find it?

Gender: Male
Race: Hell-Spawn Tiefling
Human Heritage: Chelaxian
Nationality: Molthune
Age:  16
Height: 5’ 4”
Weight: 145 lbs
Alignment: Lawful Evil

Str: 14
Dex: 10
Con:  18
Int: 9
Wis: 18
Cha: 5

Homeland: Town or Village
Parents: Both of your parents are dead.
Siblings: You have 4 biological siblings.
- biological older sister
- biological younger brother
- biological older brother
- biological older brother
Circumstance of Birth: [Lower-Class Birth] You were born among peasants or slum denizens. You grew up working the land around a village or manor, practicing a rudimentary trade, or begging in a settlement.
Parent's Profession: Serfs/Peasants
Major Childhood Event: [Bullied] In your early life, you were a victim— easy prey for those stronger or cleverer than yourself. They beat you when they could, using you for their sport. This abuse nursed a powerful flame of vengeance.

Influential Associate: [The Mercenary] With this person, there was always a cost. No deed was done making a trade for something of equal or greater value. Whether this individual's actions tended toward good, evil, or pure balance, he was always fair in his dealings. You respected this trait and it influenced your own philosophy.

Conflict: [Blackmailed] You used sensitive knowledge or threats to force someone’s cooperation.
Conflict Subject: Civic or military official.
Conflict Motivation: Pleasure.
Conflict Resolution: [Denial] You feel little if any regret, and deny the event mostly so others won’t judge you. Few if any know of your part in the conflict, and your constant denials are meant to keep it that way.
Deity/Religious Philosophy: Iaozrael

Romantic Relationship(s): [Several Significant Relationships] You’ve engaged in a number of partnerships, but for some reason or another your relationships always fail.
Drawback: [Social Acceptance] You want others to accept you, to believe you’re special and worthy of merit. You are self-conscious about your social flaws and breaches of etiquette. Rejection is among your greatest fears. You might go to extraordinary lengths to be accepted by or seek favor from your peers.

It Takes More Than a Rib

Creating Races In Your Game

The last two pieces I’ve worked on for 3pp have been races. The books are still in editing and not out yet, but I’d like to talk a little bit about race creations as I feel I’ve gained some new insight. To some this will be old hat stuff, I’m sure. To others it might be new ground you haven’t explored but have thought about. This is also a way for me to get some of my thoughts onto a page so I can look back at them later.

Where do you start when creating a race for your game? There honestly is no one answer. Sometimes you just have a cool idea, Maybe you want a blind race that can still get around. Maybe you need something to fill a specific role such as a race of desert traders to round out an area of your world. In one case the editor thought a certain real-world critter was cool and he wanted a race based on them. So starting points can vary from person to person.

The thing about building a race is that it’s far more complicated than just throwing a few racial abilities together. Sure, I can just go in and manipulate the numerical system to get a mechanically good race, but why would I? The question should become why you choose certain racial features, not just if you can afford them. So what factors do we use to choose the traits of our races?

Genetic traits are one of the first things we think of when we think about race. Size first and foremost comes to mind. General physical make: dwarves are hardy, orcs are strong, halflings are nimble. These all come from genetic factors. Some magical abilities can be considered genetic. An aasimar’s ability to cast light and a teifling’s ability to cast darkness are genetic markers from their planar blood. Even some skills bonuses can represent a genetic leg up like perception bonuses for halflings and keen sense for elves.

Cultural factors also play a big part in the choices we make for our races. One of the most obvious cultural choice is hated enemies. Gaining an attack bonus against or a dodge bonus to avoid certain creatures because you fight them often is cultural. Many of the skill bonuses are cultural too. The gnomes bonuses to craft and profession are learned behavior. So when handing out racial abilities that are not genetic you have to ask ourselves what it is about this creature’s culture gives it these abilities.

Environment is another thing that can help shape your new race. Not all elves are born in the forest, and the snowcaster elves of Golarion get bonuses for surviving in cold weather. Environment can give little changes to your standard races that can alter their culture slightly or over time give them slightly different genetic modifiers. It’s more of an effect on the other two categories than a thing of its own.

Genetics, culture, and environment are important, but this is also a game and there are rules so you do need to make sure your race is also mechanically viable to play. Races should have their niche, but a lot of races creators err too much on the side of being exceptionally good at only this one thing. Many times that leaves a race that is both one dimensional and flat, as well as one that can’t do much other than the one thing it’s good at. Learning to balance out a race so it can do a few things is a fine art; one even I’m not sure I’ve mastered yet.

All of this is a very basic overview of the process, but I didn’t even have a lot of this going into my first race building project for a Pathfinder 3pp title. When you’re writing something for more than just one game you also have other factors to think about;  Race specific feats, races specific traits, alternate racial abilities, and racial archetypes to name a few. Today I am just focusing on the very basics of making a new race for your Pathfinder game.

What new races have you created? Why do they exist in your world? What is your most common way to start the race creation process? Share your process with everyone in the comments so we can get a better understanding of the process.

Character 27 - O Ashi Krishnamoorthi

Our Oni-Spawn Tiefling has now taken shape. With a Tian parent, I have decided on the Samurai class as his chosen profession. With a high Int, I will focus on feats that work around combat expertise. Training in the Sword Saint archtype and Iaijutsu dueling the idea that his strikes are faster than they are strong so using a Wakizashi he will take weapon finesse and slashing grace. Making the choice of a combat class not so bad for a character that is smarter than he is strong.

O Ashi Krishnamoorthi

When Sumie Yokano returned to her homeland of Hongal with a husband not of the Tian-La and a mixed son, her people questioned her. When she was again with child by her Varundi spouse, the seers proclaimed that the being in her womb was evil. When her tribe’s elders sent warriors to excise the evil from her body, Sumie’s husband Janrali fought them bravely, allowing her to escape with their son and unborn baby at the cost of his own life.

Sumie had been a powerful samurai in her own right, and now as ronin set out to put the entire continent of Tian Xia behind her. As many traders of the Tian had before her, she chose to travel to and inhabit the lands of Brevoy. She settled into the small town of Eagle’s Watch, the seat of power for House Orlovsky. Thus O Ashi Krishnamoorthi was born a son of Brevoy.

O Ashi’s birth held true to what the seers had said, the child had the blood of the Oni in him. His skin was tinged red, his eyes were black as night, and his brow was a ridge of bones, He had all the markings of one of the Ja Noi, Hob oni. The blood of the evil spirits was not all that marked him though. O Ashi was born with a full head of stark white hair, a sign that he was marked by one of the gods for greatness.

The Oni-Spawn, known as a Hungerseed to the few Tian who resided in Eagle’s Watch, had a rough childhood. He was frail and barely survived his early years, being susceptible to every minor sickness that plagued the town. Surviving disease wasn’t the only trial of the youth, a local woman that ostensibly befriended his mother in fact sent word to her tribe and they came looking for her. Sumie dispatched her child’s would-be assassins easily but she would never trust another Tian again.

The blood of the Tian-La nomads was strong in O Ashi and as he aged he began to feel the call of the road. It wasn’t until a traveling duelist – one of the Aldori swordlords – came through town that he saw his chance to escape. At fifteen the Hungerseed child left his home behind his mother’s back and took up training with the travelling swordsman.

The life of an apprentice duelist was not all fun and games, and as it turned out this particular practitioner of the art of Aldori dueling was not a very nice person. Derision at every turn from his teacher, and distrust (at best) from those who looked upon his oni-like appearance began to wear on him. The last straw to his apprenticeship was when the duelist pressured him into swearing an oath to one of the priests of Gorum the lord had chosen to duel and then breaking that oath to help his master win. It wasn’t so much that O Ashi cared about the priest or deceiving him, but being so easily manipulated was just too much.

When O Ashi returned home his mother showed him nothing but love. His brother had left home as well, to settle new lands with some Brevoy adventurers, and she missed them both deeply. Hearing of her son’s exploits she felt the nature of the Aldori training was not something her son needed. Although she was now ronin she knew she must teach her son the ways of the Samurai. Her own specialty of Iaijutsu dueling, she claimed, would give any Aldori Swordlord pause during a duel.

Along with the sword training, Sumie taught her son the ideals behind honor and justice. She tempered her lessons with the belief that even the law may be corrupt, and what is right is more important than what is allowed. Although his outward appearance hadn’t changed demeanor had and this new found sense of duty and self even brought him love.

With his training complete and a wife in Eagle’s Watch, O Ashi finds himself at a crossroads. With the support of the two women in his life, he now looks forward to the future and what may come.

As O Ashi is brought to life, I still wonder what other people would have created with these rolls.
