CRB is a repository of all the creative things that float through my mind about the RPG Pathfinder. Two major features are random character generation and building characters based on the god they worship. Anything that seems like it adds to the creative aspects of the game will pop up from time to time, including location descriptions, adventure ideas and even short stories. CRB won't just be my own creativity, it will open the floor to anyone who has an idea sparked by what I present to you.

A Slip of the Tongue

Followers of Crocell

In the depths of hell on the layer of Stygia lives a collector of things that never were. How does one speak in languages that never existed? Only the scale-winged devil of the Palace of Delusions knows. This week we take a look at Crocell, the Infernal Duke of hidden waters, illusions, and language.

As always, let us imagine we are sitting at our theoretical gaming table. Our imaginary GM sets out the rules for the game that we will play. In this game, we are to make a follower of Crocell. The character does not need to be a divine caster, just a devotee of The Soothing Sin. What character do you make?

The Lost Word

Although books that get made in languages that don’t exist only seem to exist on the outer planes, the sect of Crocell known as The Lost Word takes after its patron by ferreting out books in lost or dead languages. The sect maintains a library hidden within the one of the many swamps in Ustalav. Some say they roost in the Graidmere Swamp, while others believe they secrete their books in the Dippelmere Swamp. The brothers of The Lost Word keep its location a secret, even going so far as having a failsafe to wipe their memories if they are questioned about it.

The brothers themselves are all seekers of knowledge. Wizards, investigators, and rogues make up a large portion of their membership. Clerics and Oracles use their connection to the Infernal Duke to aid them in locating the general area a lost tome might be.

The Broken Image

Crocell’s purpose for collecting tomes in non-existent tongues is to find a pattern in what is obvious insanity. The Broken Image looks to aid its master in the search for meaning within chaos by driving other people mad and studying the effects. Members of this sect use their power of illusion to accomplish this task. Some they leave in their natural environment see how they interact with their old lives. Other victims are taken off to secret locations to be studied in a controlled environment.

Members of this sect are all illusionists of some kind. Arcanists, bards, sorcerers, and wizards make up the bulk of these followers of The Soothing Sin. They will also add mind altering charms into the mix if they have them available, and whatever else it takes to break their victims. The Broken Image is if nothing if not thorough and each subject’s study is carefully cataloged later for further review.

The River of Recollection

In the lands of Northern Garund water can sometimes be hard to come by. Thuvia with its arid scrublands and the deserts of Katapesh and Osirian can be especially hazardous. The members of the sect known as The River of Recollection lend their aid in locating water to those in need, for a price. They seek to expand their patron’s knowledge of the world and their charge for locating water is a memory, freely given.

This sect is made up of two distinct groups. There are those who find water, usually rangers and the occasional druid, and those who extract the memories; clerics and oracles usually fill this role as they have the connection to their patron to transfer the payment.

The water winds and is full of life just like this deity's followers. Who is your disciple of Crocell? Why have they chosen to dedicate themselves to The Soothing Sin? Where does their devotion to this Infernal Duke come from? Let me know in the comments.

Catch a Tiger By The Toe

Devotees of Ose

On the second level of hell, outside the grand city of Dis, resides the master of the infernal forges. A creator of great weapons for the forces of hell, this being seeks to harness chaos to bring about order. Devils are creatures of pure order yet today’s divine being has the domain madness and the subdomain insanity, both of which can be consider chaotic. Today we look at how to reconcile that in three possible sects for Ose, the Infernal Duke of betrayal, doom, and obsession.

As always, let us imagine we are sitting at our theoretical gaming table. Our imaginary GM sets out the rules for the game that we will play. In this game, we are to make a follower of Ose. The character does not need to be a divine caster, just a devotee of The Duke of Claws What character do you make?

The Chaos Tempered

In the lands of Ustalav the horrors that roam the land drive many to the brink of insanity. DrHershawKlempt believes that the souls that have seen the worst and broken can be the best defenders of order on Golarion. Working in one of the handful of asylums in the bleak country of terror he finds those with broken minds and attempts to put them back together again -- just enough to be of use to his master, the Infernal Duke, Ose.

The Chaos Tempered is Dr. Klempt’s secret army of nut jobs and wackos that work toward stemming the tide of chaos in Ustalav. Just as his master seeks to use a protean device of pure chaos as an ultimate weapon, Dr. Klempt sees the chaotic minds of this patients as a method to  fight the horrors from the planes of chaos on the face of Golarion. The sect members come from all walks of life, their only connecting factor is Dr. Klempt. Many do not even understand whose will they truly serve.

The Locked Gauntlet

When work becomes obsession that is when Ose makes his way into the hearts of those who toil. As the master of the forges on the second level of hell, the Duke of Claws has a special place in his twisted soul for those who use the forge to create on Golarion, especially those who forge weapons. The Locked Gauntlet is a small sect of smiths who obsess over creating the greatest weapons known to man.

This group is active within the land of Cheliax and only has about a dozen or so members. Not just any smith is chosen to become one of Ose’s creators of devastation; only those whose hearts are closed to all but the single-minded act of creating increasingly more powerful weaponry are asked to join. Many Cheliaxian smiths venerate the Duke of Claws but few get his attention.

The Hidden Tigers

Many think of Ose only as the master of the forge and the creator of doom, but betrayal is also included among his areas of concern. The Duke of Claws is if nothing else a patient being. Like his sacred animal the tiger, he knows how to lie in wait for the right moment to strike. The Hidden Tigers take this to heart as a sect of secret agents hidden among foreign  governments awaiting the moment that their betrayal will cause the most strife.

The sect works out of Cheliax as agents of her Royal Majestrix Queen Abrogail II. Although the Queen knows nothing of their activities as to allow for plausible deniability, it is believed that members of this sect have infiltrated many of the major governments around Avistan. They pose as senators in Andoran, major domos in Taldor, and supposedly even members of the Gray Gardeners in Galt. They all await their moment to pounce and once again help expand the reach of the Chelish Empire.

Forged in betrayal and tempered with obsessions are those who follow Ose’s path. Who is your disciple of Ose? Why have they chosen to dedicate themselves to The Duke of Claws? Where does their devotion to this Infernal Duke come from? Let me know in the comments.

Rising From the Fall

Affirmed of Iaozrael

In the strict hierarchy of Hell the Infernal Dukes serve under the Archdevils. Their respect for the authority of their betters, however, doesn’t mean that they stop trying to move up the ranks themselves. Iaozrael is the Infernal Duke of authority, hubris, and lies. Little is known about him or his followers, but today we are going to explore three possible sects.

As always, let us imagine we are sitting at our theoretical gaming table. Our imaginary GM sets out the rules for the game that we will play. In this game, we are to make a follower of Iaozrael. The character does not need to be a divine caster, just a devotee of The Untarnished Angel. What character do you make?

Marred Beauty

This sect of Iaozrael worshipers have taken to the Infernal Duke’s teaching as one who has survived and made himself stronger after disfigurement. Every member of this sect has been scarred or maimed in some way. Each was considered beautiful before whatever accident occurred to disfigure them. They come together to rebuild their lives and use The Untarnished Angel as a role model.

The members of this sect all come from a place of social status. Nobles, aristocrats, and merchant princes make up a majority of the faithful. Although few were adventures beforehand, almost all have taken up some form of magic as a means to hide their deformities. Alchemists using strange concoctions to alter their shape, transmuters doing the same, and illusionists both of the wizard and bardic variety are some of the many paths the membership follows to regain their lost beauty.

The Unbound

To the followers of Iaozrael the truth is like a pair of shackles. Being bound by what is slows the process of getting what one wants. It is therefore much easier to resort to making one’s own truth. To many of the Infernal Dukes followers the proper use of a lie is an art form; but to The Unbound it is a game.

Members of the Unbound tell lies – beyond their normal use of personal gain – as a grand competition. Who can tell the biggest lie and have the most people believe it? Who can have their falsehood spread as truth so much so as it muddies the reality of things? The Unbound is full of silver-tongued con artists from all walks of life, but for them the only truth is the competition.

Company of the Burning Wings

This sect is more a band of mercenaries who follow the teachings of The Untarnished Angel. Each man is a proud man of action. Many have served time in one military or another either by enlistment or conscription. They each understand their own place in the hierarchy and respect the authority of the man above them, as they also try and maneuver themselves into a more advantageous position.

Currently the Company is working alongside the Imperial Molthune Army. None of these men have had a place they can call home and a few years of services will make them citizens of the expansionist nation. They have managed to install a few key agents within the military structure itself as they continue to work as independent contractors.

The authority of Hell is all that the followers of this Infernal Duke need. Who is your disciple of Iaozrael? Why have they chosen to dedicate themselves to The Untarnished Angel? Where does their devotion come from? Let me know in the comments.

Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap

 Adherents of Nergal

Nergal  – the real world deity – has so many aspects to his being that Paizo split it into two entities. Last week we looked at the Demon Lord Nurgal, this week we will explore the Infernal Duke Nergal. The fiendish Nergal takes atrocities, pestilence, and war as his spheres of influence, but even less is written about the Infernal Duke’s followers than there is about the Demon Lord’s.

As always, let us imagine we are sitting at our theoretical gaming table. Our imaginary GM sets out the rules for the game we will play. In this game, we are to make a follower of Nergal. The character does not need to be a divine caster, just a devotee of the Slow Death. What character do you make?

Order for a New Varisia

When Korvosa was founded by the Chelaxians there was still much conflict with the native populace of the frontier nation. The Shoanti were especially aggressive against the arrival of newcomers, although that might have been because these settlers would make homes on their sacred sites. Many groups stood for the nationalism of Cheliax and lent aid to the battle against the Shoanti. Among these groups was the pro-Chelaxian Order for a New Varisia.

The Order was originally a group of isolationist politicians and military men who felt the Chelish were superior to all others. They were also dedicated to the Infernal Duke Nergal. They used their positions to push for atrocities to be committed against the native populace. One common tactic was plague-ridden items given to the Shoanti as a means of weakening them. The Order still exists today although they are much more covert. They are pro-Korvosian activists among the aristocracy who scapegoat the Shoanti and native Varisians who live in Korvosa as the reason the Chelish poor are so downtrodden. The violence that ensues, of course, is never their fault.

The Tightened Chain

Although Asmodeus is the most commonly worshiped deity in the Chelish Empire, Diabolism is actually the state religion. Many folks worship the forces of hell in general with Asmodeus as the leader of that hierarchy, but some take to claiming one of the other Archdevils or even one of the Infernal Dukes as their Patron. The Tightened Chain is one such group that has taken Nergal as their fiendish patron.

The Tightened Chain is a sect within the military forces of the Chelish army. They work as a special forces unit used to get what needs doing done. They excel at torture and are used to help root out enemies of the state. When left to their own accord they tend to practice their craft even on the civilians in towns that the army occupies. It’s not uncommon for citizens to mysteriously disappear when the Tightened Chain is in the vicinity on a mission.

The Affliction

The River Kingdoms tends to attract two kinds of people; those who want freedom from tyranny and those who want freedom from the laws that restrain their evil impulses. The Affliction is a group comprised of the latter type of people. These followers of Nergal are alchemist beyond compare, but instead of using their talents toward noble ends they seek to invent new plagues and pestilences in the name of their infernal master.

The group is small and incredibly secretive. Recruitment is done when an individual member of the sect finds someone who he believes is a suitable applicant. The entire group, which currently only numbers seven, decides to accept or reject approaching the possible recruit. The would-be member of the sect is tested, which usually leads to the gruesome and slow death of some innocent bystanders, and if he is deemed worthy he is brought into the fold. All members are infected with a disease to which the cure can only be obtained from a devil loyal to Nergal. Should one decide to leave the sect he or she would die their own slow and painful death.

“By any means necessary”. For followers of the Infernal Duke that means with whatever despicable tortures one can imagine. Who is your disciple of Nergal? Why have they chosen to dedicate themselves to the Slow Death? Where does their devotion come from? Let me know in the comments.

Its Not Ego If Its True

Disciples of Zaebos

Although the Archdevils are the undisputed rulers of each level of hell, the hierarchy also includes lesser devils known as InfernalDukes. Zaebos is the Infernal Duke of arrogance, nobility, and sexual perversion.  Although with many other minor divine beings we know next to nothing about their followers, Zaebos has one very distinct sect outlined in canon. Barring the vampires in the capital of Ustalav, Caliphas, today we look at other sects of Zaebos.

As always, let us imagine we are sitting at our theoretical gaming table. Our imaginary GM sets out the rules for the game we will play. In this game, we are to make a follower of Zaebos. The character does not need to be a divine caster, just a devotee of the Infernal Duke. What character do you make?

For more information on Zaebos
Zaebos’s Pathfinder Wiki Page

True Heirs

Waiting has never been a virtue of the worshipers of Zaebos. In an effort to help place those loyal to the Infernal Duke into positions of power, the True Heirs seek out those waiting in line for their inheritance and work to help them along. Even the sect itself lacks true patience and goes after the next in line for a throne or barony, but occasionally they will bring in the second or even third in line if they cannot sway the actual heir.

The leaders of the sect are for the most part failed heirs to thrones. The disenfranchised former nobles seek to live vicariously through the young would-be rulers they bring into their fold. The power they gain for themselves and Zaebos makes up for any power they may have lost by not retaining their own positions of rulership.

The Smiling Crocodiles

Although many Osirians who worship the crocodile do so in the form of the god Sobek, not all see the beast of the river as symbol of war. The smiling Crocodile is a sect of torturers that worship the Infernal Duke Zaebos.

The sect is specific to Osirian where they work for many different factions, including the noble families, to extract information from prisoners. Although the Smiling Crocodiles are known for their arrogance and viciousness, they are more well-known for their masks. Whereas some worshipers of the Prince of Broken Glass seek fame and fortune, the Crocs seek a form of anonymity and do so by wearing leather masks of their patron’s sacred animal.

Taboo Breakers

In most parts of the world Calistria is the best known as the goddess of lust and sex. In Cheliax, however, the influence of the infernal brings on more perverse carnal needs among its populace. The Taboo Breakers are an underground sect of Zaebos that cater to the most perverse needs of Cheliax’s elite.

For certain perversions members of the sect will perform the acts themselves. Some nobles have much darker needs and for these times the Taboo Breakers keep a stable of slaves to fulfill their client’s desires. Most importantly the sect keeps detailed logs of all of their client’s dirty deeds in case there is a need for blackmail in the future.

When you know you’re just that good, your heart belongs to Zaebos. Who is your follower of Zaebos? Why have they chosen to dedicate themselves to the Prince of Broken Glass? Where does their devotion come from? Let me know in the comments.

Not Just Another Pretty Skeleton - Ruzel the laughing skull

It’s Saturday and thus time to talk about a god. For those of you who haven’t been a part of my explorations into the religions of Golarion, here’s how it works:

Imagine, if you will, you're making a character for a group. Your only instruction is that you must be a worshiper of a specific god. You do not need to be a divine casting class, although you can be, but the party’s purpose is working toward the goals of this specific divine being. I'd like not just a race/class combo, but a little bit about why the character would choose to dedicate themselves to this particular deity. Feel free to make up secret or not-so-secret orders within the church, or even sects outside of the church that you think might be interesting. With only this one piece of information that must be true, let your imagination go wild with the rest.

Today's god
Ruzel, Lawful Evil Infernal Duke of blasphemy, humor and undeath
Ruzel’s Pathfinder Wiki page
Ruzel’s Archives of Nethys Entry

Comedy and undeath, not two things you often see together. But is becoming undead the ultimate trick on life itself. It does fly in the face of the natural order; a cosmic joke of sorts. So are Ruzel’s chosen, the cults of the Sabletongue.

The Cackling Assassins

When the people of Golarion speak of the hyena-men known as gnolls, they most often tell tales of the savage beast-men that roam the wastes of Casmaron. Tribal and violent, these gnolls are known for attacking caravans and dragging merchants into the desert to consume their flesh. What few know is that perched on a mountain top somewhere in the deepest heart of the Zho Mountains of Qadira lies the sanctuary of The Cackling Assassins.

The Cackling Assassins are a pack of gnoll assassins renowned as some of the most deadly killers in Casmaron. No contract they have ever undertaken has remained unsatisfied. Their weapon of choice is a deadly poison that causes the victim's muscles to jerk and contract violently, cracking bones and pushing forth spastic grunts of pain that sound remarkably like maniacal laughter.  And, perhaps most disturbingly, every corpse is left with a  grin on their face. Part of the price they require for their perfect murders is another living being to be offered up as a sacrifice to their devil patron. The person given as payment must mean as much to you as the person being killed, love for hate.

The sacrifice is delivered to a labyrinth beneath the fortress, where they are harried into a wild hunt. The hyena-men’s mirth echoes off the blind corridors and long hallways as they pursue their prey to a horrific end. Those who hire them are often plagued with dreams of their sacrifice's fate, experiencing night after night in every detail, the horrible death they suffered. The gnolls get what they want, and both the client and the victim end up with nothing. The Cackling Assassins are the only ones that get the joke, and in this dark humor the goals of Ruzel are served.

The Immortal Brotherhood

Many people seek immortality but very few can find it. The sun orchid elixir is one path but with only one dose a year, those who seek to fight off the ravages of age grasp at any straw available. The organization known as the Immortal Brotherhood have cultivated a reputation of being able to grant men the ability to stave off aging. Little do people know that they are a front for a cult of Ruzel worshipers.

These ascetics reside in a monastery in Thuvia, perfect for scooping up those who fail in their quest for the sun orchid elixir. The monks are tended to by odd, almost human-like automatons. Supplicants spend months and even years following the whims of the masters in an attempt to cleanse their body for an immortal life.

What the supplicants don’t know is that this is a great trick by Ruzel’s chosen. Each monk takes their own supplicant and determines what they value most in life, then forces them to give it up as part of the path to “eternal life”. They also force them to subsist on a diet of various foul herbs and extracts telling them that it will “purify the body”. In reality, these treatments are intended to slowly twist and dement the supplicants in body and mind until they finally die and rise again as an undead servant, totally loyal to their mentor monk. The monks use these undead servitors to play out a complicated game of murder, espionage, and even outright warfare in the Undercroft; a massive cavern complex that spreads for miles through the earth beneath the monastery.  At the heart of this game is one simple fact: the quicker a brother can convert a supplicant the more pieces they can have in play, but the more thoroughly they corrupt him the more powerful the piece will be in the end.

The grand purpose behind these secret battles is the brother’s own shot at a sort of immortality. The automatons that move about the monastery are the true masters of the Immortal Brotherhood. Each of these clockwork bodies takes one hundred years to craft including dozens of complicated rituals designed to fortify them against damage both arcane and physical, as well as any sort of magical scrying. At the end of this time, the monk that has earned the highest rank in the games is ritually killed and, through the power of Ruzel, anchored to this world as a ghost. Incredibly cunning and wicked, these ghosts inhabit the golem bodies, thus granting the incorporeal brother a means to affect the corporeal world. This also allows them to progress the work of Ruzel both within the brotherhood, and via proxy servants, among the unsuspecting people of the world outside the walls.

The Cuckoos

Like their namesake, the Ruzel cult called the Cuckoos live and work among other groups. More explicitly, they worm their way into the churches of other gods in an attempt to corrupt their faithful. Although lay people are the easiest to lead from the path of their patron gods, the true prize is those granted divine power. The ultimate coup is to cause a paladin or cleric of one of the goodly gods to fall by their own free will. Such dangerous games can be difficult to pursue so more often the Cuckoos make up for quality with quantity, corrupting large groups of lay people and causing them to work towards goals at odds with the god they think they are serving.

The tools of their trade are twisted schemes and confusing propaganda. A Cuckoo might set up an orphanage in the name of Sarenrae only to subject the children to brutal discipline and near slave labor conditions. Some might even be sold into slavery, something that Sarenrae would truly abhor. Iomedae’s hospitallers might be used to sterilize entire groups of people because “the children would only be born into poverty and pain anyway.” Cuckoos might also convince money movers in the church of Abadar to embezzle funds while building a new holy site. Any time they can twist the followers of another god from the inside the Cuckoos smile at their grand joke.

So if you had to make a follower of Ruzel, who would they be? What would their goals be? What is his grand joke?
