CRB is a repository of all the creative things that float through my mind about the RPG Pathfinder. Two major features are random character generation and building characters based on the god they worship. Anything that seems like it adds to the creative aspects of the game will pop up from time to time, including location descriptions, adventure ideas and even short stories. CRB won't just be my own creativity, it will open the floor to anyone who has an idea sparked by what I present to you.

Character Exploration 42 - Najila Dunestrider

I like the idea that planar-blooded creatures are not just from human stock. This premise was brought up in Pathfinder for aasimar and teiflings but I also apply it to the elemental planar-blooded creatures. We saw this first with my orc oread and most recently with my elf undine. This week I work with my third oread character, one of halfling stock. A twin with great strength and dexterity as well as decent amount of will. From the sandy lands of Qadira, a satrapy of the Kelesh Empire. The question I answer today from the random stats and background information is “who is this character”?

Quick moving but strong with a trickster god for a patron, I decided to go with brawler as a class. Sometimes when all the jokes go wrong, she needs to fight her way out of a situation. I also like to think that the brawler’s martial flexibility represents her ability to read people and adapt to situations as needed. With that in mind I see Snake Style’s use of Sense Motive as a means to make attacks hit harder and to riposte against missed attack as something this character might take.

Najila Dunestrider

In the Keleshish Empire halflings are considered incredibly lucky. To this end many halflings travel with caravans so that their luck might rub off on the trade expedition. Many enterprising halflings have not only taken up jobs as luck bringers in caravans, but have laid claim to some of the many oases across the empire to create their own caravan stops. These stops, in many cases, have sprung into full-fledged halfling settlements, one of which is where Najila and her twin brother Nen was born.

The Dunestrider family had lived at the Abassia Oasis settlement for many generations. Both of Najila’s parents were excellent potters whose work was sought out by many along the trade route. Beyond their dedication to their craft, the Dunestrider clan also had a penchant for shrewd investment. Although not rich by any means, growing up Najilia wanted for very little.

Najila and her brother were as opposite as could be, but they were also inseparable. Like many twins they seemed to almost know each other’s thoughts. Before they could fully speak halfling, they had a language all their own which they used to communicate. This secret tongue meant the two siblings often kept things hidden from others, as they would only confide in each other.

Although not identical Nijila and Nen were similar in appearance, enough so that only their parents could tell them apart. When they hit puberty, however, their true differences began to manifest. Najila stopped growing altogether and was shorter than most other halflings, although her body proportions stayed the same she felt heavier than most. Her brown hair became the color of sand and her skin took on an almost grainy texture. Like many in the Kelesh Empire the blood of a genie, in this case a Shaitan, flowed through her veins.

Her brother, who had always been her opposite, also showed signs of genie blood. He manifested the earth’s opposite with the watery traits of a Marid. Even though their differences became more pronounced, the two could never be separated, they lived for each other and always would. And like sand and water the pair was always mud in someone’s eye.

Into their formative years, the two halfling twins lacked the hard-working trait for which generations of their family had been renowned. Najila and Nen were more interested in having fun than working hard. The two were constant practical jokers who were the only ones in on their little pranks. Although not overly bound to religious matters themselves, many claimed they were children of the Empyreal Lord Picoperi.

Their jokes never really went too far, at least not in their own eyes. When a haughty sorcerer came through town hawking his wares and flashing his power, the two jokers knew just what to do. A bit of acting on Nen’s part and a little white lie sent all the sorcerer’s snake oil into the oasis pool with no money to show for it. Suffice it to say, the finger wiggler wasn’t at all happy about it.

Where Nen was a master of words and could talk a camel out of a drink of water, Najila was a master of fists. Their jokes would occasionally get them into trouble with a capital “T” and when Nen couldn’t talk their way out of it Najila would make sure no harm came to either of them. One of her best traits as a fighter wasn’t how hard she hit but how well she read people. She could usually see a strike coming from a mile away just by reading her opponent.

The only thing the pair had in common was a certain sense of pride. They each thought they were the best there was at what they did. The problem became that they also felt they were too big for the small town. When a younger sister was born, the two decided it was time to strike out into the larger world. Sad to see them go, their parents revealed to them their “Grams” had left them an investment. When they cashed out, the twins had more than enough money to get them to any city on Golarion.

With money burning a hole in their pockets and the need for adventure burning a hole in their soul, Najila and Nen set out on the next caravan into the larger world. What Golarion holds for them only Picoperi knows, and he ain’t telling because that’s the big joke.

And there you have my little halfling oread, but is this what you would have made? Does brawler fit your thinking or is another class better? Would Picoperi be more prominent in your character’s life or is acceptance of the Empyreal Lord as a patron with minor prayers enough? What would you have done different?

Character Exploration 32 - Orangus Tarth

Oreads: earth elemental blooded, usually thought of as slow and steady. This week’s random rolls saw our Oread as steady, with clarity of thought and purpose—but he is far from slow. He has a criminal past with a neutral outlook on life from the land magic forgot. With Alkenstar city being so close at hand this character just screamed gunslinger to me, so I rolled on the gunslinger table for some added info and took some alternate racial traits to really give him the closer-to-the-earth feel.

Firstly I replaced energy resistance acid, Oread magic, and earth affinity with ferrous growth, granite skin, and treacherous earth. So our Oread Gunslinger has actual stone-like skin, the ability to adjust rocky surroundings to more favorable conditions, and the ability to turn unworked non-magical iron into any object up to 10lbs. I imagine when he just needs that one last bullet he’s ready.

The roll on the Gunslinger chart was this:

Gunslinger Training: [Black Powder Presence] You grew up belittled and even beaten for not being the biggest or the strongest of your compatriots, family, or race. With no burgeoning aptitude for magic, you looked for some other way to exceed those who found superiority in brute strength—and you found it in gunslinging.

Orangus Tarth

Many people think of Alkenstar as the city of the future, filled with wonderful and dangerous creations, as well as a reliance on science instead of magic. Even the people of Alkenstar tend to consider themselves light years ahead of those who still rely on the arcane. But like any city, not every citizen lives a life of privilege and even Alkenstar has its slums and back alleys.

The family Tarth were residents in one of these seedier areas of the City of Iron where they plied their trade on the streets. Entertainers, both parents spend their days and sometimes nights as buskers, trying to make enough money to put food on the table. This left a young Orangus, and eventually his sister Telsia, on their own most of the time.

Telsia was ever the inquisitive type outgoing, and carefree. Whereas Orangus was quiet, introspective, and somewhat bookish. The young boy was also small and scrawny for his age, so much so that one would think Telsia were two years older than he and not the other way around. His sister’s nature meant that Orangus got a lot more attention than he wanted. Being small and noticed mean that he was picked on and easily pushed around.

When Telsia fell in with a bad crowd and started dating an older boy, this street rat took Orangus “under his wing.” What this relationship more meant was that  he was tricked or pressured into doing things he didn’t want to. When the children’s father died of a disease they couldn’t afford to cure, Orangus threw himself headlong into the gang’s activities. His mother felt she had lost not just her husband, but her son as well.

Orangus grew and when he hit puberty his growth spurt wasn’t so much in height as it was in bulk. His musculature increased, his body becoming thick and bulky. His changes didn’t end there either. The legacy of his father’s family took hold of itself and Organus’ skin became like stone, his sickly constitution replaced by a hardiness he had never felt before. And with this came the courage to break free of the gangs.

Telsia still ran with her boy, although their relationship had soured and she felt trapped. Orangus, however, could not leave without her and made to confront his former mentor. When the boy pulled one of Alkenstar’s renown pistols on Orangus, the earth elemental kin reached out his hand and warped the iron by his touch. Although not the stronger of the two men, Orangus was surprisingly quick and exceedingly tougher and he lay a beating in on his sister’s boyfriend, leaving him bloody with a warning to stay away.

Orangus hadn’t realized he took the weapon with him and a few minutes later the steel tube reverted to its original form. With far more confidence than he’d ever had and with his life at a crossroads, the young Oread took up the way of the gun as a means to make ends meet. Unsure as to where is life is heading, his only loyalty to his sister and mother, Orangus also has moral life choices to make after years caught up in the criminal underbelly of the city of guns and steel.

Is this how you pictured the barebones stats of our Oread coming out? If not how would you have done it? Maybe Gunslinger wasn’t your first choice, so what was? Tell us all what you would have made?

If you’ve enjoyed watching Orangus come to life becoming a patron is the best way to support the CRB, for as little as $1 a blog post (not including the Monday stat rolls) or $12 a month, you make it easier to do what amounts to a second full-time unpaid job. Character Nine: Horguk the Sieger

pages with writing on them, the words Character Exploration, Pathfinder
Before we get into it here are the random rolls in case you forgot.

So at this point Unchained came out and I decided to go with the unchained Barbarian using the invulnerable rager archetype. The other thing is: looking over this background one of the first things that came to my head was which god he would follow. He receives the blessing of Varg the Orc, deity of Iron, siege engines, and war. Blessed at birth, destined to become the living siege engine.  That helped pick out some of the mechanical stuff.

Structural Knowledge Religion trait - You gain a +1 trait bonus on Knowledge (engineering) checks, and Knowledge (engineering) is a class skill for you.

Earthsense - As a swift action, you can gain tremorsense to a range of 60 feet until the beginning of your next turn. You can use this ability once per day at 1st level, plus one additional time per day at 5th level and every 5 levels thereafter, to a maximum of five times per day at 20th level.

Basically Varg gives knowledge of buildings so that you may better destroy them. And you cannot hide from me, I can sense your movement.

Starting Feat: Power Attack, and going to move into some fun with Improved Sunder, which is something I've never really used before.

And here you have it: Horguk the Sieger

In the Belzkan Hold either you are a warrior, or you serve. Although much of the labor is done by slaves of various races, the Orcs who cannot fight are treated barely above this chattel. Being born into a family of peasants is never pleasant, and unless you can prove your worth you will be left to rot under the thumb of true orc warriors. That is unless one of the orc gods specifically singles you out as one of his chosen. On the day of his birth Horguk the Sieger was so chosen, one of a set of twins he carried not one, but two recessive traits: Being born half-human while his twin was full orc like the rest of his siblings, and having the blood of stone flow through him. What may have been an inauspicious birth leading to a life of ridicule changed when, as the stony crystal and granite head of the Half-Orc child tore his mother open, a large rocky humanoid form appeared before the family and midwife proclaimed the child the chosen of the god Varg.

The Horguk was raised by his family until he was six and then he was turned over to The Ironbound, worshippers of Varg. The stone born half-breed was instructed in the ways of destruction, his body whipped when he failed. They built inside of him an insatiable rage and an urge to destroy, as well as hardened his already tough body. The Ironbound holy men thought that Horguk would craft their greatest siege engines. What they didn’t expect was that Horguk himself would be their greatest siege engine. His stone body would shrug off the pelting fire of a towns defenders while Horguk’s mighty swings would bring down doors and walls. But that was his destiny, not his present.

For a time before his coming of age, Horguk was also taught the art of destruction by the Shaitan bound to the service of Varg. These beings of rock bestowed upon their earthly kin a horn dedicated to The Iron Warrior. Before he could take down a wall by himself, Horguk learned the true destructive power of Varg as he would destroy solid stone outcroppings with just the sound of the horn. But destruction should be personal, it should be visceral and it means more when dealt by ones own hand. At his coming of age Varg again recalled his Shaitan servitors and the Horn was taken from Horguk and returned to its place in the hall of the orc god.

But for all his training and all his power, there is one thing even a God cannot get between and that is an Orc and his kin. Set to march on a human settlement the Orcs of Horguks tribe allied themselves with others tribes, orc and monsters alike, who sought to expand the borders of their peoples and wipe away the human trash. The stone born half-breed was sent with his twin to siege the town with a pride of Leonine warriors. During the siege Horguk’s brother fell, but the lionmen pressed forward. Horguk stopped to tend to his sibling but the other Orcs and Leonine in his unit attempted to force him to press the siege. In a fit of fury Horguk fought his way past his own troops carrying his brother, and in his betrayal the Leonine commander fell ending the alliance between the lionmen and the Orcs, causing the two tribes to fight each other instead of the human settlement.

Now Horguk, supposedly Chosen of one of his people’s own gods, was cast out for choosing his brother’s life over the battle. He now roams the Belzkan Hold. Clanless. Looking for answers to his own life. Waiting to hear the call of Varg again. Praying for a visit from the Iron Warrior’s Shaitan servants. Anything to make sense of what he has become.

Character Exploration Nine: The Randomness

six sided dice against a red background, Pathfinder Random Roll
I finally figured out my own charts for doing some of the planar races at this point (Aasimar, Teiflings, Oread, Ifirit, ect.) For the Planar blooded creatures I am following the same rules as Aasimar and Teiflings. Although the stats remain the same as their entry planar blooded creatures, they can be born of any humanoid race so I made a random roll chart. The only time there is a difference is if they are born of a small race, then they are themselves small creatures instead of medium.

Half-Orc Born Oread - a 21 point buy so 1pt over what I usually play with.

Str 15
Dex 17
Con 12
Int 13
Wis 9
Cha 12

Raised in an Orc settlement
Both parents are still alive
5 Brothers and 1 sister; one of the brothers younger, one a twin, and the rest older.
Blessed birth
Serfs/Peasants
Magical gift
Influential associate: The Mystic
Betrayed a non-humanoid monster that trust you because of family
One significant relationship

Drawback: Social Acceptance

Don't forget the background I wrote for this will be posted tomorrow at 8am. But what kinda of character would you make based on these rolls? What class would you pick? Do you have a background in mind looking at these pieces of information? Share with us and let us see your creative juices flow.
