Skulkers of Kelinahat
When people think Lawful Good they think of the light,
honesty, and truth. Sometimes, however, the truth can only be uncovered from
the shadows with guile. This week we look at the Empyreal Lord Kelinahat. Known as She of the Ebon Wings, this shadowy Archon has
intelligence, spies, and stealth in her portfolio. We know little about her and
even less about her followers, but I aim to remedy that.
As always, let us imagine we are sitting at our
theoretical gaming table. Our imaginary GM sets out the rules for the game we
will play. In this game, we are to make a follower of Kelinahat. The character
does not need to be a divine caster, just a devotee of the Empyreal Lord. What
character do you make?

The Night’s Watch
Although most undead are thoroughly evil a rare few do
not succumb to the needs of their new forms and a handful are known to resist. Among these are a group of vampires from
Ustalav who have turned their backs on their traditional role as subjugators of
mortals and blood cannibals. What keeps this handful of vampires from turning
fully to the darkness? The worship of the Empyreal Lord Kelinahat.
Of the Empyreal Lords, Kelinahat does not fear the night
or the darkness and she knows the shadows have their purpose. Although this
sect numbers less than a dozen, its members are intensely loyal to their patron
and her other followers. When seeking information from the bastions of evil
undead in Ustalav, who better to send than another vampire?
The Shadow Brands
The Shadow Brands are a group of spies who specialize in
shadow magic. They operate out of Andoran, but close to the borders of Cheliax
and Nidal. This group works closely with other freedom fighters in the area.
They use their talents to infiltrate both nations to do everything from
reconnaissance to rescuing slaves.
The sect is made up mostly of rogues,
inquisitors, and sorcerers and has
the single highest congregations of Shadow Dancers in all of Golarion. The
Shadow Brands also have a very high concentration of fetchling members. Entry into the sect requires a test of one’s skill, which usually
includes entering and exiting a room with only one door without being seen.
The Ciphers
Many pieces of information retrieved by a spy aren’t
immediately decipherable. Everyone from thieves’ guilds to governments will use
code to keep messages meant for specific eyes secret. When a secret code needs
to be cracked with alacrity, it is always best to call on the followers of
Kelinahat known as the Ciphers. If the Ciphers can’t crack the code, no one
can.
The Ciphers use every magical and mundane tool at their
disposal to do their job. Diviner wizards, investigators, bards, and rogues make up a majority
of the sect’s membership. Every member of the organization is a polyglot. If
you don’t speak at least four languages fluently there is almost no chance of
gaining acceptance in the organization.
Kelinahat shows us that good can come even from the
shadows. Who is your follower of Kelinahat? Why have they chosen to dedicate
themselves to the She of Ebon Wings? Where does their devotion come from? Let
me know in the comments.
