CRB is a repository of all the creative things that float through my mind about the RPG Pathfinder. Two major features are random character generation and building characters based on the god they worship. Anything that seems like it adds to the creative aspects of the game will pop up from time to time, including location descriptions, adventure ideas and even short stories. CRB won't just be my own creativity, it will open the floor to anyone who has an idea sparked by what I present to you.

Character Exploration 59 - Kuni Ogo

A Kitsune in Taldor, an interesting prospect indeed. This week’s random roll left me a lot of options, except for anything involving a high intelligence score. The touch of divine energy at birth meant I could go one of two ways: Give into the divine and accept his place early on, or go against the obvious will of a divine power. A decent strength and dexterity mean a combat role was not out of the question. Although the middling charisma means he wouldn’t make the best paladin. So what to do?

To be honest I had no clue so at first. I tried to pick a place for him to be from in Taldor and I found the Monastery of the Seven Forms, a Tian monastery in Taldor. It was a sign. I immediately decided that he would be an unarmed fighter of some kind. I also decided to have him eventually embrace his divine touch, so in the end I chose the Warpriest class with the Sacred Fist archetype.

Kuni Ogo

Originally born in Tian Xia Kuni, Ogo was the second to last child born to two clerics of the Empyreal Lord Damerrich. Her worship was seen as little more than a cult among the people of the Dragon Empire, but her followers were dutiful so they were welcome in the cities of Tian. In many places followers of The Weighted Swing acted as executioners; they took on this duty so that others would not have to. They considered the condemned their charges and gave even the most hardened criminal an honorable death.

Kuni was always considered chosen by Damerrich, the touch of her divine energy flowed through his mother upon his birth. This exposure to the divine may have infused the young Kitsune, but it damaged his mother. It was said she would never conceive again. She did, but the scars of Kuni’s passing killed her in childbirth with his younger sister.

The death of his mother was hard on both him and his father. Although Kuni’s father never mentioned anything, Kuni blamed himself for his mother’s death. The Ogo family, looking to leave behind their heartbreak, moved from Tian and settled  in Taldor. Looking for a place to find some amount of peace, Kuni’s father choose the settlement known as The Monastery of the Seven Forms, an ancient Tian monastery that had an underground city spring up around it.

A new home was an easy place for Kuni to forget his troubles, or at least pretend to forget. He longed to move away from the idea that he was somehow the chosen of Damerrich. He went out of his way to live a lifestyle quite the opposite of The Weighted Swings precepts, instead shirking responsibility and living a life of carelessness. This, of course, saw him fall in with other street kids.

Kuni took to being almost a stereotype of what people believed Kitsune to be; He became a trickster and thief.  His naturally nimble fingers and his ability to read people and tell them what they wanted to hear convincingly helped out. But like most petty criminals he eventually got caught from time to time.

In his neighborhood was a Taldan guardsman, a former fortune seeker set to protecting the city these days. The man was a follower of Abadar but had a soft spot for kids and was constantly trying to get Kuni to reform. The pleas to live a better life fell on the deaf ears of the rebellious boy, but he continued to try whenever he could.

With little he could do to control his son, he gave the boy over to the hands of the monks who still studied in the monastery. The normally lengthy waiting period for admission was waived as one of the boy’s targets was one of the monks. The keeper of the library caught the boy trying to pilfer his coin purse, but had taken a liking to the boy after thwarting his petit crime.

The Order of the Stalwart Fist teaches a fighting style that is a mix of Tian and Qadiran combat techniques and the boy took to it like a fish to water. Although he was never the quickest learner the librarian became his mentor and he relished watching his teacher’s lust for knowledge even if he himself couldn’t understand all aspects. The librarian apparently didn’t like anyone, except for Kuni.

Over the course of his education among the brothers his outlook once again turned back to the ways of his parent’s patron deity.  The everyday study of martial arts as well as his teacher’s insistence on dedication to a task – even if it was difficult to achieve – made him the perfect conduit for the will of Damerrich who again touched him, releasing the power instilled in him at birth and giving him the ability to be a stalwart defender of his god’s will.

With his life turned around Kuni felt a sense of sorrow. All this time the guardsman who sought to help him was right, but it took till now to see that. Kuni hunted down the man to make his apologies but found that a year earlier he had been killed. As a form of penance he sought out the Abadarian’s killer.

After a lengthy search Kuni cornered the guardsman's murder. The villain turned out to be one of the street rats he ran with as a kid who had graduated from theft to murder. He had the man dead to rights and he could have killed him right there. But even though his deity was the lord of justice executions, this was not his place. The Abadarian would want the criminal to stand trial. And so Kuni brought in the murderer.

Now graduated from the monastery, a journeyman of the Stalwart Fist style, Kuni seeks to find his place in the world and in the eyes of his god. What he is meant to do with his powers and his combat ability is unknown to him but the answer is out there somewhere. If he can just face it with patience and determination he should do well in the world.

And there you have it, Kuni Ogo, student of the Stalwart Fist, chosen of The Weighted Swing. But is this the character you would have made? What class would you have chosen? How would you have his divine touch? It’s never too late to let us know in the comments.

Random Roll 59 - The Randomness

Kitsune are mostly known for being from the Dragon Empire of Tian Xia, but our randomly rolled character this week is from Taldor. This isn’t the first Kitsune we’ve done. Our character this week is slightly above average in almost all his stats, except intelligence. Book learning may never has been his thing. His parents were clergy and he was touched by divine energy at birth. Even though he fell in with a bad crowd in his formative years but eventually turned his life around and took to keeping the Empyreal Lord Damerrich as his patron. Was this change due to someone smarter than he being his mentor, or were there other reasons? Tune in Friday and we’ll find out.

You might have belonged to a gang, a thieves' guild, or some other nefarious organization. It was easy to cave in to pressure and do whatever they told you to do, and your outlook is colored by moral ambiguity.

Influential Associate: [The Academic] One of your associates had such a lust for knowledge that she could never be satisfied with simple answers or obvious solutions. This desire for knowledge frequently exceeded her need for companionship, but you were the single exception. Character 29 - Shinju Okumura

Our Strong and Hardy Kitsune was a tough nut to crack in terms of where to go with the background. My biggest question was does he run toward his family legacy or away. This time I started by narrowing my choices of class down and ended up with Ranger or Fighter. A percentile die roll got me Fighter and then I rolled on the Fighter background chart, and the result helped me pick which way to go.

Mercenary

Everyone needs to earn a living; and in your youth you were fast, strong, or tough enough to fight for pay. There are good causes and bad causes, but at the end of the day it all comes down to money. Sometimes you got easy jobs like guarding merchant caravans. Other times the jobs are rough, like fighting in a rebel lord's private army.

This opens up access to the Mercenary social trait.

Shinju Okumura

The might of Tar-Baphon may have only been spreading through central Avistan, but no one believed that the Whispering Tyrant would stop with just conquering a small portion of Golarion. Although most of those dedicating themselves to the forces of the Shining Crusade came from Taldor, not every warrior called the area home. Fighters from Osirian, Vudra, The Kelesh Empire, and even Tian Xia came to lend aid in the face of this overwhelming evil. When all was said and done and victory was declared against Tar-Baphon’s hordes, not every crusader went home.

The Okumura family came from the lands of Tian Xia to do battle with the Whispering Tyrant. This would not be the first time they had done battle with Tar-Baphon either. Family lore had always spoken of one of their ancestors heeding the call of Aroden to battle Tar-Baphon when the necromancer first tried his hand at world domination. When tales of the Shining Crusade reached the shores of Tian Xia, the Okumura family swiftly made their way to the frontlines.

After the fall of Tar-Baphon the Okumura clan stayed in Lastwall, seeing it as their sacred duty to be vigilant in case the Whispering Tyrant would try to rise again. This, of course, is the legacy that Shinju Okumura and his older brother would hear from their father day in and day out. Like his ancestors Kuni and Mari, who came to the region to fight in the Shining Crusade, Shinju’s father, grandfather, great grandfather and so on have dedicated themselves to the defense of Lastwall and vigilance for signs of the Tyrant’s rise.

Shinju grew up in a life of quiet solitude on the family estate, if it could be called that. The “estate” was comprised of a tract of forest the Okumura clan was gifted for their deeds in the Shining Crusade. From a very early age Shinju, like his older brother Anji, was taught to fight. It was always expected that both boys would follow in their ancestor’s footsteps. This daily routine and high expectations never sat right with Shinju, and even though he excelled at martial training – more so than his older brother – he chafed under his father’s tutelage.

Rebellion against his father made things tense in the Okumura household. Shinju’s sister, Yuma, was hit especially hard, having both respect for her parents and a special place for her older brother who always treated her like a princess. One of Shinju’s major acts of rebellion was to sneak off to Vigil where he would spend time with his friends getting into trouble. No matter how much his father forbade him the young kitsune would always find a way out of the house and onto the streets.

A boy named Oldrin Girsk, who seemed to know everyone and everything in Vigil, was Shinju’s best friend. The two were almost inseparable, getting up to good-natured shenanigans. Shinju appreciated that Oldrin accept him beyond just his family name. For his part Oldrin appreciated Shinju’s way with women. Carousing was one of the things the two did often and Oldrin saw his friend go through quite a few “girlfriends.”

But even Shinju’s friendship couldn’t survive the lengths to which he would go to piss off his father. When a group of arms dealers came though Vigil selling to the crusaders, Shinju joined up with them. The thing Shinju didn’t know was that the weapon runners were also selling to the orcish side of the conflict. When Oldrin tried to tell him, Shinju just wouldn’t listen. Rather than risk getting caught up as well, Oldrin cut ties with his friend leaving him to his own fate.

Although he later found out the truth behind the weapon dealers activities, Shinju never felt bad about disobeying his father. The act, however made it impossible to return home. Shinju decided that he needed to leave Lastwall and Vigil behind. The only person he said goodbye to was his little sister before signing up with a mercenary organization recruiting in the area. With just a sword and some armor the kitsune left home to find his fortune in the world at large.

Character Fourteen: Eris Terrik, The Flame Tailed Fox

I decided to do something a little different here and wanted to see what I could make by stacking as many archetypes as I could. The base was fighter and I’m using the Eldritch Guardian archetype garnering her a familiar. Also the Mutagenic Mauler archetype gaining her the Mutagens. And finally the Martial Master archetype allowing her martial flexibility, the ability to acquire feats she needs a few times a day, like the brawler. The question now was how to write all these things in.

The orphanage in Abasalom was not such a bad place to grow up. Even if you were an unwanted child, the other kids never looked down on you. But fending for yourself on the streets of the city of the starstone was no easy task. Eris Terrik new that better than anyone, but she got by because she had family.

Eris never knew about her brothers and sisters growing up, she was a bastard child whose peasant mother fell for a dashing rake who promised her the world. When her mother died and she was sent to the orphanage she was dead set on finding her deadbeat father. But the only thing her search found were other children he left behind.

After leaving her mother pregnant he flitted through a few other women. A young noble woman bore him a son, but the bastard was also sent off to an orphanage. Eris’ father’s line must have many stories to tell as she came out with fire elemental blood running through her veins, and a set of twins also put up for adoption by their bigoted mother came out with a bit of elf blood in them.

Eris being the eldest and biggest of her siblings saw herself as their protector. When there was trouble the four would stick together and Eris always stood right out in front. Sometimes her fire nature would get the better of her but she always made sure never to let it affect her brothers and sister.

Even in Absalom there are those who seek to do harm to others. Gangs are a fact of life, especially in the dark corners. When one of the gangs decided that Eris brother who had a way with mechanical devices, needed to run with them, Eris was furious. In a fit of rage she attacked the headquarters of the gang, beating those still there to within an inch of their lives and burning the building to the ground.

When she as around 15 years old a woman came to the orphanage asking around about her. The mystery woman turned out to be her aunt on her mother’s side. As a member of the Pathfinder Society she had been travelling the world and only recently found that her sister had a child. A box of belongings her mother had stored in the old attic which included a letter had been found by recent tenants and shipped off to her aunt who came looking for her.

red fox in a green field, pathfinder, Daikitsu, KitsuneEris new found relative spent many hours talking with her that first day. But as a Pathfinder she couldn’t stay, and Eris couldn’t leave her brothers and sister. Her aunt introduced her to the local Pathfinder lodge and promised any letters she wanted to send would find their way to her if brought there. Her aunt also gifted Eris with a pet, a small red fox that had become attached to her in her travels. She told her the fox always seemed special, destined even and maybe that destiny belonged with Eris.

With the fox her Aunt also brought her tales of other lands, in particular of the homeland from where her mother came. The far off land Tian Xia. One of the things that struck Eris were the tales of the Kitsune and the Daikitsu. When her aunt once again returned from her travels Eris began to take in all she could about the people she never knew. In the small community of Tian living in Absalom she found little temples and began the worship of Daikitsu, to whom she dedicated herself only slightly less then her dedication to her siblings.

Eris’ attachment to her family and her temple, her staunch defense of all those around her, brought her a further gift from Daikitsu. The fox given to her by her aunt became more than just a pet. It started with flashes of perception; seeing things she normally would have missed, reacting quicker than she ever had. And then she began to feel the fox, instinctively knowing where it was and how it was feeling. She had been blessed lady of foxes as a guardian.

In her years she had gone from bastard child set adrift after her mother’s death, to a big sister with a family and a fierce fighter against the gangs of Absalom. Now she had become a servitor of Daikatsu. A life of hardship faced with love and determination has seen Eris and her family through. And now all that lies ahead is their entire future.

Remember the first person to post a race (Core or featured), that will be the race I use for my next randomly rolled character.
