A dwarf lass from under the snowy wastes of the Lands of the
Linnorm Kings. Raised with one brother by just her mom the family was little
more than peasants. Like most dwarves she is quiet hardy, but among her people
she is also incredibly charismatic. Having died at some point in her childhood
and betraying a family member over religious ideals later on in life. Drawn to
the worship of the dwarven goddess Folgrit, mother of the dwarven Pantheon. Who
is this dwarf? What is her story?

Niana Roottender(Nini, to her friends), is a beautiful (by Dwarven standards), young Dwarf, daughter of Raela Roottender, and has eked out a living by raising roots and tubers in the deeper reaches of Dwarfhome. Her parents were once low-level guards, when a dalliance led to lax security and a successful Duergar raid. Her father was killed, and her mother lost an arm. In the investigation and aftermath, the family lost their honor, and are now relegated to digging at the soil to support their community.
ReplyDeleteCurious as a child, Niana wandered into long disused caves, venturing into a forbidden area, missing the warning signs posted to keep the unwary away. A security patrol caught her, and while chastising the young Dwarf, ghouls attacks (hence the warnings!). Pushed aside to keep her safe, Niana saw the glowing, red eyes of the wight that the guards missed. Overcome by fear, she remained rooted to the spot as it reached out and caressed her cheek, its black energy sucking the life force from her. Her eyes blackened, and she saw the world as the wight did - in shades of grays - with life pulsing with white energies, drawing her to it. A blur of golden light sped over her shoulder and crashed into the wight - obliterating it in a shower of black motes - and Niana felt herself slowly lose strength in her legs as she sat heavily. In her world of grays and whites, a figure in glorious gold appeared before her, and spoke, though the words were distant and hollow in this land between life and death. Suddenly, the figure shot into clear focus, and colors exploded into view - and Niana saw the Cleric of Folgrit before her, cradling Niana's head in her hands, the last words of a spell falling on Niana's restored hearing. It was that day that Folgrit was chosen as Niana's patron deity.
Some ten years later, Niana and her brother, Durala, were again exploring, and ghouls again attacked. Seeing the foul undead behind her brother, her voice caught - and she turned and ran in terror, memory of her last encounter still fresh in her mind. She heard his cries of pain and pleas for her assistance, but she continued to run, abandoning her brother to his grisly fate. However, as luck would have it, Durala survived - though his back is horribly scarred from the dirty claws of the ghouls. Only Durala and Niana's mother know of this betrayal, and the shame has driven the young Dwarf to this day.
After Durala's return, shame drove Niala to the temple - where she swore a Stone-Oath (the most binding) to never allow fear control her actions again - and, though her heart may quake, she is still the vision of strength in frightening times, always appearing calm and cool-headed. This inner-strength only adds to her appeal.
She had dreams of reclaiming her family's honor and forever burying the "Roottender" name in the soil in which she's worked for so long. While extremely strong in her faith, she does not wish to enter the Temple - she has been making crude weapons of stone and cast-off scraps and training as a warrior, specializing in fighting in the tunnels and caves of her home. She's painfully aware that she lacks significant strength - but uses her common sense to carry her through her improvised fighting routines. She is so sure that her wisdom will defeat all odds and her aspirations of reclaiming her family's honor, that she is a bit too conceited in her abilities.
That's a really good one. And I'll say that it is very different from the one I came up with. I like that because its always fun to see how different people will come up with vastly different backgrounds from the same given data.
