Welcome to the Creative Repository Blog. This blog will be
dedicated to getting the creative juices flowing by letting you glimpse my
creative juices. One of the main features of this blog will be a number of
character explorations which will all be done using the same thought exercise,
completely randomly rolled characters. I’ve been gaming for about 30 years now
and in all the time I’ve found that I very much tend to play the same
characters over and over. The histories and personalities may be different but
the skill set and mechanics all tend to be the same. So to that end I like to
get my creative juices flowing and think outside the box by randomly rolling up
a character.
How does this work:
Step one) randomly pick a race – A lot of the early character
explorations that will be posted I did on a Pathfinder page on facebook (https://www.facebook.com/groups/20416871387/)
and I asked the members there to pick a race for me.
Step two) randomly roll stats straight down the line – I
like to do 4d6 drop the lowest but only keep sets that have at least +3 total
ability score bonuses. The characters are supposed to be heroes (or anti heroes
or villains) and as such they should be above average.
Step three) Roll on the random background generator – The
random background generator first appeared in ultimate campaign and you can
roll on the individual charts if you like. But there are two sites that have an
auto generator using this information. I use the ones at Archives of Nethys
now, but I originally started with the one at the d20pfsrd.
Step four) Choose a class –I look at the stats, race and
background of the character and decide what class all of these things would
drive the person to become.
Step five) write a background - Taking the disparate pieces
of information I’ve got I write a background for the character. Usually a short
affair, only three to five paragraphs.
Each character exploration will be posted as two parts. All
of the random stuff; race, stats and
random background. I will leave that post up for a while, between a couple of
hours and a full day. This will give you the readers time to play along if you
wish. Write your own backgrounds however short or long, or just decide what
class you think the character will be. After the period is over I will post my
background for you to see. The joy of this is to see how the same information
can spark different ideas among different people.
