CRB is a repository of all the creative things that float through my mind about the RPG Pathfinder. Two major features are random character generation and building characters based on the god they worship. Anything that seems like it adds to the creative aspects of the game will pop up from time to time, including location descriptions, adventure ideas and even short stories. CRB won't just be my own creativity, it will open the floor to anyone who has an idea sparked by what I present to you.

Character 81 - Akara

This week’s random rolls took me quite some time to hammer out. I had the idea of the story I wanted in my head but I needed to see if I could find the mechanics to marry to it. Finding ways to get the longspear usable with monk abilities like flurry was a huge pain. Luckily crowdsourcing helped me figure it out.

I already had a base of knowledge to build off on the society of the kasatha as I’d done my own write up of them. So even without much written in the canon of the race there was enough to influence where I went. So now I happily present to you the culmination of these random tidbits with my kasatha monk.

Akara

In the intervening time since the Rain of Stars a handful of kasatha have emerged from their stasis chambers and found a home on Golarion, mostly in Numeria. However, it wasn’t until the Iron Gods, in particular Hellion the Lord of Rust, made their presence known and adventurers opened other pods that more of these creatures came to Avistan.

Although Numeria is in large a barren waste, it is a very dangerous place. Not all of the kasatha who emerged opted to stay. When the Technic League and others began hunting down these alien life forms, a group of three small families led by one tribal matriarch set to the east. They crossed out of Numeria, through the more civilized lands of Brevoy, and into the secluded wilderness of Iobaria. This is where Akara was born.

The small tribe established their own village, something far afield from their nomadic ways on the desert planet. But this is not their planet. Like most of the other inhabitants – even the humans – the kasatha were insular. They would occasional don complete body coverings and trade is some of the larger towns.  Because of this isolation Akara saw naught but other of her own people for her time growing up.

Akara’s favored aunt was just coming into her own and heading out on her Tempering, a wandering rite of passage, as she was coming into her early childhood. When she left Akara’s relative gave her a small pendant that she said would protect her. Her aunt would return every few years but the wandering spirit had gripped her while she traveled, although she did always return with the most interesting tales.

Settling had never been part of the kasatha way of life. Eventually all the perils that come from groups living in close proximity with each other and not moving plagued to the kasatha village, just on a smaller scale. The family of the Iliak clan had been the group’s leader on their travels and they felt that they should continue to be in charge once they settled. Although their attempt were rebuked, the Iliaks still tried methods of control through fear and intimidation.

Akara spent much of her childhood watching her family or another get pushed around by the Iliaks and this was something she always hated. When one of the younger Ilaik boys – just a little older than her - fell in love with a girl from one of the lower families, Akara used this information to humiliate the boy, and his family. She always felt bad for the girl but her disgust of the Iliak family would often let her overcome those feelings.

As the young kasatha grew older it was nearing her time for her own tempering. Only one more year before she could go out on her own and see the world as her aunt was still doing. In her excited Akarabegan taking bigger risks. Could she jump that span? Climb that tree? Outrun that bear? This was her way of testing the world around her, but in the end it was also one risk to many.

Akara came crashing to the ground after an errant swing of a branch from her favorite tree. She landed on her back and hit her head on a rock. Her adventures would have soon been over, except that the neck piece her aunt had given her began to glow. The metal crumbled to dust, and just as quickly as the damage was done it was healed.

On the day of her own tempering her aunt returned, much changed. She still retained her wanderlust but her demeanor was calmer. After the ceremony to send Akara off into the world her aunt said that she would travel with her for a while, that she wanted to introduce her to someone.  Once her bags were packed the younger kastha made her way off into the world with her long time mentor and confidant.

In the wilds of IobariaAkara met her aunt’s mentor, an old human with a long white beard and a stony demeanor. He had travel from a far off land, forever separated from his love because of their families. In his travels he settled in this uncivilized land because he was able to communicate with the spirits much like his patron Tsukiyo.

Akara spent years training with her aunt’s sensei. Often with her relation when she wasn’t away, she learned the finer points of using the longspear and tempering her own spirit. When their teacher passed a mere six years into the young kasatha’s training the two returned to their village.

Although Akara loved home she had a wandering spirit much like her aunt. Unlike her aunt however, she found it hard to leave again. When the aunt didn’t return after two years Akara finally broke down and set her sights on finding her favored relation. Taking little more than her spear and some food the kasatha set forth into the great world on her search.

Where did you take the background of your kasatha? What class did she choose? How did she come to follow a Tian deity? Which family member was her childhood influence? Where did she receive her magical gift from?

Random Roll 81 - The Randomness

I find the Kasatha very interesting and although there will probably be a lot more written about them in the upcoming Starfinder books I am going to use the write up of their culture I did. Our Kasatha is strong and quick but frail and lacking a force of personality. I need to tie her into a Tian deity and an area of the Golarion world that is ill-defined. Tempered Souls

Devotees of Jaidz

Jaidz, the Fearless Claw, Empyreal Lord of Cowards, the Untested, and Youth. There are no gods specifically of the kasatha so when I did Monday’s random rolls I also rolled for which god he followed. In that way I have attempt to attach Jaidz in some manner to these alien creatures, as can be seen in the background I wrote.

As always let us imagine we are sitting at our theoretical gaming table. Our imaginary GM sets out the rules for the game we will play. In this game, we are to make a follower of Jadiz. The character does not need to be a divine caster, just a devotee of the Empyreal Lord. What character do you make?

For more information on Jaidz
Jaidz’s Pathfinder Wiki Page
Jaidz’s Archives of Nethys Page

Tempered of Ji’d

Not so much a sect as a way of life for an entire people. On the kasatha homeworld, the Empyreal Lord Jaidz is known as Ji’d, the Challenger. When a youth believes he is ready to become an adult, he must first travel the sands to test himself, before returning to the clan. This rite of passage is called the tempering and every kasatha child must undergo it.

To prepare the child for his time away from the clan, there is a day long ritual which includes mediation, a gifting ceremony, and ends in a great feast. During the meditation portion of the ceremony the child and the spirit speaker of the clan commune with Ji’d and ask for him to guide the soon-to-be-tempered kasatha through the trials that await him. At the feast itself a place is set for Ji’d and food and drink are left there for him to take at his leisure. Those who never return from their tempering are said to have failed Ji’d in some way.

Order of the Black Claw

In Varundi it is well known that pinnacle of perfection is seen in the teachings of Irori. Not all people are ready to delve directly into the mysteries of the mysteries of the Master of Masters. The Order of the Black Claw prides itself on testing those that wish to eventually make their way into one of the famous schools of martial training.

Each of the masters of the Order of the Black Claw has come from one of the major schools of martial arts in Varundi or Jalmeray. They have reached the pinnacle of their art and have even taught at the school where they were trained. Although Irori represents true perfection, it is well known that some must forgo their ultimate potential to make sure others might even find the path to try. It is considered a great honor to be asked to join the Order, and usher in the next generation of potential ascended.

The Deserter’s Union

Many see those who run away from services as worthless, but followers of Jaidz know that the horrors of war can make even the strongest of hearts find fear. Where many will tell you that a coward once born is always a coward, Jaidz’s faithful believe even a deserter can redeem himself.

The group was started by three knights who ran from battle during the shining crusade. They redeemed themselves through the direct guidance of Jaidz himself and returned to the field just in time to be instrumental in Tar-Baphon’s defeat. In return for their courage they swore to aid others who have fallen prey to their own inner demons.

The Deserters Union is unknown outside of the church of Jadiz. They seek not to draw attention to themselves as they work to rehabilitate those in their charge, every member of the Union was once a deserter themselves. To help new members find their courage, they are paired with a ranking member to find it. One of the major ways the sponsor helps their charge is by taking them adventuring. Unbeknownst to many adventurers, they have a deserter and their chaperone among them.

Paladin Code of Jaidz

Bravery is action in the face of fear. Without fear there is no bravery. Without action, there is nothing but failure.

My action will be an example to those who witness it. In me they will see what they can be, but in my action they will see the claw of Jaidz.

Fear, indecision, inexperience, these will all pass. With the grace of Jaidz, when they do I will look upon the path they took through my heart and know that I am their master.

Like a tiger cub, the young must be tempered to survive in a dangerous world. It is my duty to see these cubs trained if others cannot.

Perhaps these sects and the paladin code may inspire you in your creation of a worshiper of Jaidz. Who is your devotee? Why have they chosen to dedicate themselves to the Empyreal Lord? Where does their devotion come from? Let me know in the comments.

Character Exploration 41 - Hassa

The third piece in our week of the kasatha sees the fleshing out of our random rolls from Monday. Some of the background here uses what I’ve created for their culture in my Wednesday article People Out of Place. Our kasatha this week is quick, hardy and smart. To me his minor charisma negative is more a lack of worldliness or understanding of people in general. A prophesied birth and an encounter with a bizarre creature are hallmarks of his upbringing. So who is this alien on Golarion? What is his life like in the wastes of Numeria?

For class this week I chose rogue, specifically the Numerian Scavenger archetype. As his starting traits, I went with prophesied, starchild, and vagabond child. I took the third trait because I thought the drawback family ties really suited this particular character. I know I usually roll on a class table if one is available, but I’ll be honest, this week I forgot.

Hassa (HavHassa to outsiders)

“There are aliens among us”, they tell you. In Numeria this statement is fact. Some alien lifeforms are known entities, like the gearmen and the androids. In much of Numeria those aliens that are found usually end up lynched by the superstitious kellids or on the dissection tables of the technic. In fear for their life, many of these beings from the stars hide in the Numerian wastes.

The small city of Hajoth Hakados breaks the mold of the standard Numerian settlements. The trade city on the crusader road to Mendev not only openly welcomes androids, but also a witchwyrd from the red planet Akiton. For this reason, other alien creatures make Hajoth Hakados their home, even if they continue to hide their presence. Such is the case for the Havala clan of kastha.

The Havala clan consist of two small families. The rest of the clan either remains on the kastha’s distant home world or died in the crash that left them stranded here. None of the clansmen are sure how long they’ve been here as they have only emerged from stasis chambers a little over forty years ago. The survivors consisted of two mated couples, one of which has a daughter with them.

Hassa was the first child born to the Havala clan. With his birth the male of the other couple, a shaman proclaimed the first child of the clan born in this land would lead them home. After his birth Hassa’s mother took up the position of head woman. She further proved her fertility and thus her power in the clan when she bore twins; a brother and a sister, Jaska and Usula. New life, of course, means a small but growing clan.

For the first few years of Hassa’s life, the clan roamed the badlands of Numeria just as they had roamed the sands of Kasath. With his destiny to find a home he never knew, the boy took to watching the stars as if drawn to them. By ten years old he knew each star by heart and with him in the lead the clan was never lost.

To the kastha every creature of this world was a new wonder, a wonder to be avoided at all costs. The mutated creatures of Numeria were deadly, making hunting a momentous task. The humanoids were far more dangerous than any beast and the Havala tribe made sure to avoid both the kellid tribes and the technic wizards. To a young boy lost in the stars, however, some things stand out. Although few, some of the Iobarian centaurs remained as nomads in the Sellen Hills and young Hassa found the horsemen so interesting he felt compelled to talk to them.

For months Hassa treated with the centaur tribe, leading his own clan on a parallel migratory path to theirs. From one of their warriors he learned much about the world and especially Numeria. When the centaurs swung south and stopped in the city of Hajoth Hakados, the boy snuck away in the day while his family slept to explore these new wonders. His friend in the centaur tribe showed him a city accepting of all kinds of strange people. A city that was as alien to Numeria as his people were.

Eventually centaurs roamed further than the kasatha tribe was willing to go, even at Hassa’s urging, so they roamed the plains once more. They did, however, add a few southern stops which allowed Hassa to sneak off the Hajoth Hakados a few times a year. His love of the city grew and the boy felt the call to explore other cities.

When the clan was near the metropolis of Chesed, Hassa could no longer fight his urge to explore. Seeking to gain access to the city he sought out what the humans called “adventurers” to get him in. Using thinly veiled threats, he forced a woman encased in the shiny metal armor the humans liked, to take him into the city. She did as asked but Hassa’s unsophisticated disguise was seen through rather quickly.

Unlike Hajoth Hakados, Chessed was very much under the control of the Technic League. When Hassa’s attempt to stay hidden was seen through, they quickly came after him. Trapped in an unknown place, Hassa would have assuredly been captured except unbeknownst to him, the adventurer he cajoled was a crusader of Sarenrae heading to the worldwound. His would-be victim stood against the technomancers and helped Hassa flee the city. The young kasaha apologized profusely but the crusader understood the impatience of youth having been a redeemed street rat herself.

These events left Hassa wary of the outside world. And at thirteen, when his brother and sister were born, he sought nothing but to protect them from all the horrors of this forsaken world. Whether in a city or not, their alien nature made them targets. The Technic League had begun hunting for them, unknown four armed aliens. Sometimes a member of the league would come themselves and sometimes they would send vicious agents. It had become harder and harder to escape them so Hassa brought the clan to the only place he knew the Technic League had no sway, Hajoth Hakados.

At first the clan refused to enter the city, but caring for two infants and running was tiring to all of them. Being head woman Hassa’s mother eventually saw the wisdom in his words and the clan moved to the trade city. Hajoth Hakados was a place of wonder to the clan. Although they still tried to go unnoticed, the fact they could move freely and mostly unmolested came as a shock after years of avoiding the people of this planet.

The clan set themselves up in the Homeshore district. Learning to stay settled was an even greater challenge for them than staying ahead of the league. Hunting the plains was their only real skill, the men would bring back hides that the women would than cure and trade or sew into armor for even the most bizarrely formed creature. Hassa, ever inquisitive, began to explore the city, although at first not understanding the idea of personal property he had a bad habit of letting himself into people’s homes.

At thirty Hassa has reached the age of his “tempering” and is time for him to travel the world and find himself. The clan will gather and perform their ritual to Ji’d–who the people of Golarion call Jaidz–the spirit of untested youth. Hassa will leave the clan until he feels he has passed the tests of Ji’d and then will return to the clan as an adult.

The clan still believes he is destined to lead them back to Kasath, but Hassa wonders; the prophecy just said “home” and maybe he has already done that. Still his plans, as he leaves Hajoth Hakados, are to search the wreckage of what he knows to have been a great spacefaring vessel that is spread across Numeria to see if he cannot find some knowledge of where his people came from.

There you have it, my take on Monday’s rolls. Is this what you envisioned when you looked at the rolls? How did your character idea differ? What is your kasatha’s prophecy? How do you reconcile following a Golarion Empyreal Lord when he is an alien to this planet?

A People Out of Place

Examining the Kasatha

Monday I began my look at the kasatha—by reader request—making random rolls for a kasatha character. Today I’m going to actually take a look at the race as a whole. I will be looking at their place on Golarion and in the greater universe in which Golarion belongs. Creating a society for a race is something I touched on last week in my article "it takes more than a rib."

There is very little actual Pathfinder related information on kasatha. They are referenced in four different books which included their race write up in People of the Stars, and two one page snippets in the Iron Gods AP books; Fires of Creation and Valley of theBrain Collectors and their monster entry in Bestiary 4. I’m sure that the announcement of Starfinder means these creatures will get a bigger write up in the near future, but until then I’m going to take some creative license.

In this exploration, I would be remiss not to mention that these creatures have basically been taken wholesale from the Barsoom series books by Edgar Rice Burroughs. I’ll be honest, I haven’t read any of these novels. I was more of a Tarzan guy than John Carter guy. I did see the 2012 movie which I’m sure many of the younger readers will be more familiar with. That said a lot of the characterization that is to come will be from my own mind since I have very little knowledge of the source material.

I want to outline what little information we know about these creatures. They come from a desert planet that orbits a red sun. The planet—which they call Kasanth—has violent weather patterns and dangerous fauna, predominantly of a hexapodous variety. On their world they live a nomadic life style. Two of their only known customs are that they always wear something to cover their mouths, and before becoming an “adult” they take a ritual “tempering” where they travel the world on their own.

One of the most telling things about their culture is outlined in the bestiary entry. The kasatha are a matriarchal society. Women and men look ostensibly the same to most outsiders, as there is very little sexual dimorphism between males and females, but what does this mean for the kasatha? There are many reasons this could have come to pass, but I’m going to go with childbearing being sacred. Because there is little-to-no physical difference in height, weight, and strength men and women are equals in battle. Women, however, are the ones who bear and raise the young. In a harsh land where death can come at any moment, growth of the tribe is very important.

Names are an important part of any culture. How people choose their names or how their names are granted to them can tell you a lot about a people. For the kasatha, clan is all. As such they have only a single name and no last name. Everyone is of the clan and parentage means little. Kasatha also speak in a terse manner. Their names reflect this, being only one or two syllables long. When speaking among the clan they just use their name. When speaking to other clans or outsiders, they add a shortening of the clan name to their given name, to other kasatha this conveys much about who they are speaking to. So if they are named Hassak and they are from the Unesse clan when speaking to someone not of the clan they will announce themselves as UnHassak. For this reason non-kasatha often mistakenly believe that the name with the clan prefix is actually the individual’s given name.

Now let’s talk about general lifestyle. Although they travel, most of the other creatures on Kasath are violent and dangerous. Because of that, I feel that the kasatha probably don’t rely heavily on pack or riding creatures. Each kasatha’s life and worldly possessions are only what they can carry with them. Material wealth most likely means little to them as the more there is to carry the harder it is to move about.

With no general settlements, this means things like smithing, pottery, and other crafts that require large stationary equipment are probably unknown. Metal armor and weapons are probably unheard of with most of their equipment being made from bone and hide. Since hexapods make up a vast majority of Kasath's ecology and insects are one of the major hexapods the kasatha’s heavier armor would probably be made from chitin rather than steel.

Water probably plays a huge role in the kasatha’s life. Their arid world means what little they can find is probably sacred to them. Traditional rituals almost all involve the sharing of water. When two kasatha choose to be mates I imagine they have a ritual of co-mingling water that represents their new connection to each other. Spilling water rather than sharing it is probably one of the kasatha’s ultimate insults Spitting at someone, wasting water from one’s own body, is a challenge to the person at whom you spit.

The wearing of facial coverings at most instances, especially when dealing with outsiders, is mentioned in three of the four entries for the kasatha. If this is an important part of their culture we need to ask ourselves why? Living on a desert planet this practice probably arose to keep sand out of their mouth and nose. Like many things that start for practical reasons a culture has grown up around the practice as well. The kasatha are secretive and showing their faces might give away more than they may be willing to expose, so the practice has become a cultural norm. Kasatha who do not wear their face coverings around outsiders are thought to be giving away clan secrets and may well be shunned.

Religion is the next big thing. You have to question: do Golarion’s deities have sway in other solar systems of the universe? Do the kasatha have their own gods? Perhaps the gods of Golarion exist but the kasatha may call them something else? But since kasatha have no knowledge of their own history I would imagine their devotion to long-term religious beliefs are minimal. Any gods they do follow would probably be gods of nature and not ones of civilization or even more esoteric portfolios.

Although any race can choose any class, some classes may be usually more or less common because of genetic make-up (ability modifiers) and cultural mores. Also, by looking at a class that a race may or may not take, we can extrapolate more about their culture. As an example, it is well known that even with shared traditions and language, kasatha know nothing of their history. This tells me they probably have no bards. By saying they don’t have bards we can extrapolate that their race is probably very serious and doesn’t appreciate frivolity. Life is deadly on kasatha there is little time for song and play.

Being nomadic, I would imagine most of the truly learned classes are out. Wizards especially don’t seem like they fit the lifestyle of the kasatha. With very little in terms of plant life on Kasath I would also posit the alchemists are probably few and far between. In the movies, the martian creatures used guns but the kasatha of the Pathfinder universe seem a bit more savage and with a double bow using archetype, I imagine gunslingers are pretty much out for them as well.

Many of the nature-based classes are probably extremely common among the kastha. Rangers—including their bow nomad archetype—as well druids and hunters probably make up a huge number of kasatha adventurers. I can see shamans, witches, fighters, and brawlers as being quite common as well. Oddly, although they might be considered savage by most others, the kasatha are very strict with themselves so there are probably not that many barbarians among their numbers.

But what of the kasatha living on Golarion? It appears that pretty much all the kasatha who ended up on Golarion came from a single starship that crashed there. The ship wasn’t theirs, and they have no means to return home. They don’t even know where “home” is. The ship housed many kasatha of different tribes; some were used as experiments, some treated as pets, some put in a terrarium-like enclosure for study, and others allowed to roam the ship as friends. Oddly, the separate groups of Kasatha didn’t know the others were on board.

As far as has been written, the kasatha exclusively exist in Numeria. Here they stay hidden from the rest of the world in small nomadic tribes. The blasted Numerian badlands don’t quite mimic home, but enough so that I don’t think the kasatha would find it too difficult to survive. The one big difference is that Numeria is in the far north, practically under the frozen Crown of the World. The change in temperature from the arid sandy wastes of their home to the grounds that freeze for months at a time is probably a big adjustment.

Many of the kasatha traditions probably still hold true on Golarion. Especially those revolving around water. Numeria isn’t known for its supply of the life-giving liquid and many pools and streams are polluted with the waste of the stuff that came screaming from the sky during starfall. Plentiful sources of metal as well as random bits of technology have probably changed the kasathan reliance on bone and hide for weapons, armor, and other goods.

Many of the kasatha have only just awoken from life pods and stasis chambers. For this reason, the fact they are all but unknown to the world is easily explained. As the tribes begin to grow and the young must take to their “tempering,”  there is the perfect excuse for presenting a kasatha character to the world.

The kasatha are an interesting race and certainly one I would consider playing. With this new information, would playing one of the four-armed aliens on Golarion interest you? What kind of character do you think would be appropriate for one of the Numerian kasatha? Is their any other information you think could be added to what I’ve given here?

Random Roll 41 - The Randomness

This week by reader request I am focusing on the kasath. So to start the week off I will do a random roll for a kasatha character. Our kasatha is fast, durable, and smart although with slightly below average charisma. From a city or metropolis in Numeria, of which there are very few. A small family, a prophesied birth, and a meeting with a fantastic creature. So who is our new character?

Gender: Male
Race: Kasatha
Nationality: Numeria
Age: 30
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 130 lbs.
Alignment: Neutral Good

Str: 11
Dex: 16
Con: 16
Int: 15
Wis: 10
Cha: 9

Homeland: City or Metropolis
Parents: Both of your parents are alive.
Siblings: You have 2 biological siblings.
- biological younger sister
- biological younger brother
Circumstance of Birth: [Prophesied] Your birth was foretold, as recently as during the last generation to as far back as thousands of years ago.
Parent's Profession: Tradespeople
Major Childhood Event: [Met a Fantastic Creature] When you were only a child, you made contact with a magical creature, such as a dragon, unicorn, genie, pixie, or similar creature. You learned a powerful lesson or a magic trick from that creature. This meeting changed your life and made you different from the other children.

Influential Associate: [The Fool] One of your close associates was a clown who mocked propriety and custom, instead engaging in wild and somewhat random actions from time to time. After a while, you learned that there was simple wisdom to this foolery—a careless worldview that taught you how to cast off concern.

Conflict: [Blackmailed] You used sensitive knowledge or threats to force someone’s cooperation.
Conflict Subject: Adventurer.
Conflict Motivation: Pleasure.
Conflict Resolution: [Regret and Penance] Not only do you regret your action, but you have publicly admitted to it and did your best to make amends for the wrongdoing. Most know of the conflict’s details and those who don’t can easily find them out if they know where to look or whom to ask.
Deity/Religious Philosophy: Jaidz

Romantic Relationship(s): [Experience but No Substantial Relationships] You’ve had a fling or two, but have so far shied away from any ties or commitments.
Drawback: [Family] Your family means everything to you, and there is nothing you wouldn’t do for them. Maybe your ties extend to your entire clan or bloodline, or perhaps there is one specific member of your family you hold closer than any other.
