CRB is a repository of all the creative things that float through my mind about the RPG Pathfinder. Two major features are random character generation and building characters based on the god they worship. Anything that seems like it adds to the creative aspects of the game will pop up from time to time, including location descriptions, adventure ideas and even short stories. CRB won't just be my own creativity, it will open the floor to anyone who has an idea sparked by what I present to you.

Character 94 - Kap’undi

To start, I’d like to say that I had to redo this intro because after I posted the stats and background it turned out like four people had the same or close to the same idea I had. A wisdom based character from a godless country, who actually chooses not to follow a deity meant for some very interesting backstory. What was the idea that everyone had in mind? The character is an oracle. And how did I make this happen? Read on.

Kap’undi

Although most of the population of Rahadoum are Garundi and of the Mauxi ethnicity of the Mwangi, there are a number of other Mwangi ethnicities that reside in the region.  Among them, the Vang are native to the jungles of the Mwangi expanse have some small populations centers in the country. Often the Vanghave difficulty with the Rahadoumi rejection of the gods, but many others try to fit in.

Traditionally among her people, twins are seen as a gift from the gods. This is further evidenced as Kap’undi was born with the mark of Sarenrae on her arm. Her parents feared what might happen to their family as the “laws of man” prohibit any interaction with the gods, even if it is against the person’s will.

So they left their child out in the wastes to die.

Kap’undi was meant for bigger and better things, and it wasn’t by chance that she was found by nomads wandering the badlands of Rahadoum. She grew up traveling with these wanderers, unaware of her past or her future fate.

The spaces between the major cities in Rahadoum can be very dangerous. It is here as a teenager that her abilities would manifest when the child of one of her adopted tribesmen was greatly injured in an animal attack. Kap’undi’s wishes that her friend be made well poured forth from her as a flash of light that healed the child.

Although the nomads were nowhere near as strict as the Rahadoumi government, they wanted no part of the divine in their tribe. So, again, Kap’undi was set adrift. She traveled until she found herself in the capital city of Azir, a place where she hoped she could make a new home for herself.

Although Kap’undi had god granted abilities, she had no love of the gods herself. She was raised to believe in the “Laws of Man” and she felt anger that the gods would do this to her. Still, whether to power was freely asked for or forcibly given mattered not to the Pure Legion. The young woman had to continue to live the life of a lie to keep her powers hidden. Every day she had to deceive soldiers and the bureaucrats to keep her head. Although she wanted to continue to live, the lie always weighed heavily on her conscience.

Azir is where she found her family and lost them again. On the street she saw a young woman, like looking in a mirror. She followed her doppelganger all day and finally to her home in the evening. There she lived with her parents and a younger sister, the family that had left Kap’undi in the desert.

She confronted her twin and the rest of her biological family and an argument ensued. Her sister was infuriated that her parents never told her she had a twin, but the adults refused to say why they had rid themselves of the child. Kap’undi was not welcomed back, although she and her twin became inseparable, much to the chagrin of the younger sister.

Things may not have been perfect but at least Kap’undi felt she had one thing tethering her to this place. She was happy as it were. But good things are never long for those with a destiny and this fragile middle ground. The younger sister was always jealous of the returned prodigal child and eventually that jealousy turned to betrayal. She ferreted out her parents’ secret and tried to turn Kap’undi over to the Pure Legion.

The child left for dead was now forced to leave her family once more. Kap’undi took to the streets of the city to hide among the populace at large. This time, however, she is not alone. Her twin helped her escape capture and has taken up with the young oracle. Destiny, it appears, is a hard thing to fight, and although she still puts no faith in the gods, Kap’undi and her sister seek to figure out what her fated fortune might be.

What did you create with your Human? What class did her background suggest she have? Where did the betrayal come from? Why was she left for dead? How did she come to worship no deity?

Random Roll 94 - The Randomness

It’s been awhile since we’ve had a human as the race for our random roll race. Sometimes the random rolls are your friends and sometimes they are. This week we ended up with two tanked stats. Our character this week is both weak of body, and deficient in mind. A woman from Rahadoum who was left for dead at birth, and betrayed later in life but still ends up being lawful good. So lets see what reasons we can come up for that this week.

Character 92 - Herlish Insigal

This week’s character started out as just a skinwalker descended from wererats with a good dexterity. The oddities came when we realized he has both older and younger half-orc half-siblings as well as older and younger full blooded siblings. We added to that growing up in the mountains of Nex, of which there are two ranges, where pretty much everything outside of the magically protected major cities is a blasted wasteland. So with this odd mixture of background bits and dexterity with wisdom as the next follow up stat, I decided to go with the ranger class this week.

Herlish Insigal

The story of Herlish really starts with the story of his mother. She was a woman with little to no luck throughout her life. She was born in Lastwall, a place at constant war with the orcs of the Hold of Belzken. Unmarried, she bore a half-orc child, although she had never had any untoward contact with any of the orc raiders. It is believed that one of the many half-orc warriors who come to Lastwall to live down their heritage is the father but Anka never said and fled the frontier country with her child.

She made her way to Absalom and managed to secure a husband despite having a bastard half-orc child. The man was a gruff former soldier who sold his services to any who would hire. This included a merchant who was traveling to far off Nex. So Herlish’s father uprooted his family and they took the long trip across the inner sea to Nex, and from its capital Qauntium to the city of the fleshforgers, Ecanus.

Ecanus was where Herlish was born, although his parents had already spawned one boy child. Herlish was a twitchy child and as he grew up he was constantly bullied for his nervous reactions. The young boy found solace in watching all the bizarre creation going around him. Although he could never quite grasp how these oddities were made, he cherished the art of creation and many of craftspeople would show him how they made their ideas come to life.

Ecanus was also a dangerous place, and the merchant his father worked for did volatile, although not illicit, work. When you buy and sell living creatures crafted by magic, accidents are bound to happen. Some of the beasts shattered their bonds on the small estate of the merchant and sent his staff and their families running. Herlish’s father stood firm in protecting his charge but fell in the battle, leaving Anka with now four children, Herlish’s younger sister having only recently been born.

The fleshforges often require living flesh to create the monsters that are birthed from the vats. Although many of these are unintelligent animals or horrors not worth mentioning, some unscrupulous crafters will use sentient creatures to fuel their creations. In Nex slavery is legal and the fleshforgers will often buy slaves just for these purposes. But sometimes those slaves escape.

Orc and half-orc were often used as stock for these experiments because of their durability. Those that escaped started a secret underground based out of the Barrier Wall mountains to help others avoid the horrific fate of being immersed in the vats. Herlish’s older sister Alysse got herself involved with these freedom fighters and dragged her younger half-sibling along.

Since Herlish was human he could pass more easily among the oppressors, and he did this willingly, flaunting the law for his sister and loving every minute of it. The young man was adept at keeping to the shadows although not every excursion was without incident. Herlish was slowly learning the tricks to battling the creations of the fleshforgers.

Some of the beings they rescued were already changed by preparation rituals or even just proximity to magical and alchemical substances. But they were not the only ones that saw a change come over them. Whether it came from his mother or father’s side he didn’t know, but Herlish’s found the ability to alter his own shape. He was able to take on aspects of a rodent and minor abilities attributed to wererats, of whom he realized he was probably kin.

As things became more serious Herlish and his older sister went to their mother and got her to leave the city and take up residence in the stronghold in the mountains that the rebels were using. There she married yet again, a half-orc with some mutations due to experimentation. She bore one last child, another half-orc bringing her brood to a total of five children.

Herlish and his sister still fight the good fight and their younger brother seems eager to join when he comes of age. Life may not be easy for the odd family but they’re still happy.

What did you do with your skinwalker? What class did his background dictate for him? Who did he have both a younger and older half-sibling? What law or oath did he break?

Random Roll 87 - The Randomness

Halflings in Vudra, you don’t say. This character is interesting on so many levels not the least of which is that before adjustments both of the stats that halflings get a bonus in were the two lowest and the one that halflings get a negative in was the highest. So this really was not your stereotypical halfling right from the get go. The most fun part of the background is going to be figuring how her families are nobility if they are part of a travelling band or caravan. All in all some really good stuff for which you will just have to stay tuned to see me pull together.

Gender: Female
Race: Halfling
Nationality: Vudra
Age:  26

Major Childhood Event: [The War] You grew up against the backdrop of a major military conflict that affected much of your childhood world. You became accustomed to a short food supply, living in occupied territory, and moving from place to place. Several of the people you knew in your childhood were lost in the war, including members of your family.

Influential Associate: [The Lover] You had a romantic connection in your adolescent years, and this person deeply influenced your personality. Perhaps this was a first love, a casual partner you grew close to, or the one who got away. The experience bolstered your confidence in romantic interactions even though you often find your thoughts still straying toward that special someone from so long ago.

Random Roll 84 - The Randomness

This week we head into the shadows for our random rolls. One of the darkness touched fetchlings is the subject of our creation. She is woman born into poverty in a huge city in Isger.  Strong and tough as nails but nowhere near as agile as her people tend to be. She ends up becoming a mass murderer in the name of money and a follower of the fallen goddess Arazni. The question becomes why? How do we tie all these things in to a cohesive character? Tune in Friday and find out.

Parent's Profession: Serfs/Peasants
Major Childhood Event: [Bullied] In your early life, you were a victim— easy prey for those stronger or cleverer than yourself. They beat you when they could, using you for their sport. This abuse nursed a powerful flame of vengeance.

Influential Associate: [The Seer] You were close to a person who claimed to see the future—perhaps an oracle, seer, prophet, or merely some festival charlatan. Whether they're true or a trick, you've seen visions of distant places and of times that may come to pass. The seer's influence either made you into an optimist with a drive to change the future or a fatalist resigned to accept it.

Conflict: [Mass Murder] You killed several sentient beings.
Conflict Subject: Leader.
Conflict Motivation: Money.
Conflict Resolution: [Sincere Regret] Though you feel sincere regret for the event and its memory affects your behavior, it’s still a secret. Only your trusted companions know of the conflict, and they have promised a degree of discretion.

Random Roll 81 - The Randomness

I find the Kasatha very interesting and although there will probably be a lot more written about them in the upcoming Starfinder books I am going to use the write up of their culture I did. Our Kasatha is strong and quick but frail and lacking a force of personality. I need to tie her into a Tian deity and an area of the Golarion world that is ill-defined. Should make for an interesting background.

Gender: Female
Race: Kasatha
Nationality: Iobaria
Age:  Unknown
Height: 6’ 2”
Weight: 194lbs
Alignment: Lawful Good

Str: 16
Dex: 18
Con:  9
Int: 12
Wis: 12
Cha: 9

Homeland: Town or Village
Parents: Both of your parents are alive.
Siblings: You have 1 biological sibling.
- biological older sister
Circumstance of Birth: [Middle-Class Birth] You were born to the middle class, which includes merchants, artisans, and tradespeople. You likely grew up in a good-sized settlement, and one of your parents is likely associated with a guild or other trade organization. As a free person, you don't experience the bondage of serfdom or peasantry, but you also lack the privilege of the nobility.
Parent's Profession: Tradespeople
Major Childhood Event: [Magical Gift] When you were a child, you found, stole, or were given a magic item that gave you an extraordinary ability. You may have used this item for mischief, crime, or good. Since that time, magic items have always held a special fascination for you.

Influential Associate:[The Relative] There is a relative you were especially close to. To you, this person was the meaning of family. He helped shepherd you into adulthood, teaching you everything you know about the world. You are bound to this person or his memory, and you strive to keep a promise, vow, or oath that you made to him.

Conflict: [Humiliation] You publicly humiliated or scandalized someone with either true or slanderous information.
Conflict Subject: Gangster or underworld figure.
Conflict Motivation: Love.
Conflict Resolution: [Mixed Feelings] Sometimes you regret the conflict, but other times you feel as if you didn’t have a choice in the matter or that you made the right decision. Most of the time, you just avoid thinking about the conflict. Only you and maybe a select few people know of your involvement.
Deity/Religious Philosophy:Tsukiyo

Romantic Relationship(s): [A Few Significant Relationships] You’ve tried to make deep connections with individuals on several occasions, but it’s never worked out.
Drawback: [Attachment (Person)] You are attached to a particular person—a friend, family member, or loved one—who means more than anything or anyone in the world. Your thoughts always return to this person.

(Trait) Artisan
(Trait) Life of Toil
(Trait) Magical Talent
(Trait) Merchant
(Trait) Militia Veteran

In the comments please tell us what character you would make with these disparate pieces information? What class would this kasatha naturally gravitate towards? How did an alien, and her family end up in Iobaria? Why do they follow a Tian Deity? Who was the family member she respected? What was the magical gift she received? Character 78 - Bekerra Bloodbreath

Our orc this week in our random rolls gave us some limited choices in classes. Pretty much any caster class was out or she wouldn’t be able to cast any spells. Her eventual turn from the traditional orcish chaotic evil to becoming lawful neutral ment barbarian was out as a class as well. So I decided on her becoming a fighter. Not a traditional role for orcish women but then the joy was in making that work.

Bekerra Bloodbreath

When the orcs that would become rulers of what is now known as the Hold of Belzkan were pushed up from the Darklands, not all of them made their way onto the surface of Golarion. Some used side tunnels to escape their pursuers and then settled into the upper Darklands once the threat of the dwarves had passed.  Bekerra Bloodbreath’s tribe is one of these remnants of the might that was the Orcs of below.

Like most of these Darklands tribes the Crackbone orcs clan is small due to scarcity of space and resources. The Crackbones inhabit the tunnels under the Tusk Mountains on the border of the Hold and what is now the Worldwound. This left the clan with not just enemies below ground but above as the forces of the Demon Horde sought to not just take the surface of Golarion, but everything to its core. So the Crackbone clan was in a constant state of war against these abyssal forces.

Because the Bloodbreath family is related to the chief, Bekerra’s father held no small amount of influence and thus he was allowed a larger brood than most. She was one of eight children, including her twin brother. Like many orc female orcs though Bekerra was treated as little more than cattle, a prize to be won by the strength of a male in her tribe.

The repressed orc knew this was the way of her people and she was constantly fighting a war in her own mind about it. These rebellious thoughts opened her to the whispers in the dark. The demons had been on the losing end of many battles and were forced to take a different route to battle the orcs that wouldn’t join their cause. Bekerra became a host for one of these shadows from the upper world when her father promised her to one of the male orcs from his war party.

Bekerra wasn’t the only one consumed by the fiend, her connection to her twin allowed the demons to worm their way into his mind as well. When the two rebelled and Bekerra would not lay with her new mate the orc attack her father. In the battle her sire was slain and now the warrior took not just her but her mother and siblings into their tents.

Bekerra fought back in every way possible. She wormed secrets from the other women and finding what she could she cast doubt on the loyalty of her father’s killer by putting information about his mother and brothers in the chief’s ear. The fiend pushed her and her brother ever forward into causing havoc in her tribe. But the tribes shaman found her out.

In a long and very painful ritual the demons were torn from the souls of Bekerra and her brother. The chaos in their minds was gone, but so was the family and tribe that they knew. The two made a pact and steeled themselves for a journey to face the surface. They ran from kith and kin to start a new life elsewhere.

The tunnels they followed led them up to the surface between the foothills of the Tusk Mountains and the north end of the Shudderwood. The light burned their eyes but they made for the thick wood to keep the ‘scorching angel’ from destroying them. Even in the daylight the forest was under a constant shadow. The two travelled till they found an odd statue in the wood, and there they rested.

The twins had a fitful nights sleep full of dreams and nightmares. The demons that inhabited them still haunted them but in their sleeping hallucinations they were called upon by a twin soul much like their own. When they awoke Bekerra’s brother chipped two little fetishes out of stone, depictions of he and his sister. He left them at the foot of the statue.

Although she didn’t truly understand it, her twin said they were chosen. That the wood had a connection to a place called the first world. It was all strange to her but when he began to be able to cast minor spells, she followed his lead. They were the twins, warriors of the dual souled Imbrex. He would wield his power and she would protect him with her might.

They fey of the Shudderwood gave the pair a wide berth at first. When the twins began using their might to beat back the demons that would try to corrupt the wood, the creatures of the first world became friendlier. Now the two have purpose and strict and ordered minds like the stone statues of their patron. Never again will they allow the chaos without become the chaos within.

Is this how your character turned out? What class did your orc choose? Who was the demon that possessed her? What was the war of her childhood? Why did she take up the worship of Imbrex?

Character Exploration 69 - Iria Hightassel

Gnomes are a very interesting race on Golarion, seekers of new experiences. This week’s random rolls gave us a charismatic, intelligent gnome who was lacking in wisdom and dexterity. Although her parents were entertainers the deity which she followed was a hero god of spears which seemed more martial to me. So this week I went with fighter, in particular the Polearm Master. It works best with traits that give Knowledge (History) and Diplomacy as class skills.

Iria Hightassel

Iria was born in a small gnomish settlement in the Forest of Veils in the south eastern county of Varno.  One of many defense forests within the counties borders, the gnomes of the region go mostly unnoticed by the human inhabitants. Conte RisotmaurTiriac extremely hands off approach to governing leaves the humans as well as the gnomes to their own devices mostly, a situation the gnomes appreciate.

The regions – some say unnatural – weather variations give the county lengthy periods of plenty, followed by just as long periods of drought. During the times of plenty the inhabitants natural suspicions calm and in these times many of the gnomes choose to travel. Iria’s parents would take to the roads to bring their theatre troupe to the masses. Her older brother joined the group when he was of age, and Iria spent a lot of her early childhood traveling with them.

In times of famine those gnomes who still had the bug for wanderlust would follow their feet far from the borders of Varno. One such gnome was Iria’s uncle Farstalarament. Mostly he was called Farstrider because he would leave home for extended periods and travel the length and breadth of Golarion. Uncle Farstrider was by far Iria’s favorite relative and she looked forward to his visits home.

On occasion Uncle Farstrider would stay an extended period. During one such visit during a season of bounty Iria opted to stay home with her uncle instead of travelling with her parents. This time around he returned from a trip to archipelago of Iblydos. Like the human populace of Varno the gnomes were exceedingly pious, on his trip Uncle Farstrider converted from the worship of Desna to the worship of one of Iblydos' Hero-Gods Psomeira.

She spent the years with him learning at his feet. Iria trained in the traditional spear style that the Psomeira faith used. She also studied topics ranging from history to religion. Uncle Farstrider became the most enduring influence on her life. Eventually the favored uncle returned to his travelling roots.

When the gnomish community became insular during the lean times relationships had a tendency to grow. Iria had eyes for another young gnome named Harttlethop. The two became almost inseparable.  Although Iria loved him his often riotous nature would clash with her need for order. After one of his many off the cuff attempts at adventure she exploded. She destroyed a locket which had a picture of his mother. Harttlethop was as always forgiving, but to this day on occasion Iria feels the pangs of regret for her outburst.

After many years Iria was expecting a return of Uncle Farstrider. In his place however, an elf entered the small village bearing her mentor’s spear and seal. The elf claimed to be a companion of Iria’s uncle and regreted to inform her that he fell as they were fighting demonic forces in the jungles of the Mwangi Expanse. Uncle Farstrider had always said that if he perished his belongings should be returned to Iria.

Her uncle’s death tore at Iria’s soul. Were it not for Harrtlethop she would have lost herself. Among her uncles belongings were his spear and a number of books. The tomes included notes of his own travels and a prayer book to Psomeira. In honor of her uncle Iria converted to the worship of the Hero-God and promised to take up his spear and continue his journey.

Iria set out to head from home. Her first stop would be the city of Aelyosos, in Iblydos so that she might officially be recognized by the church. Always up for something new Harrtlehop choose to travel with her on her adventure. Even her brother who longed for the road and a chance to learn from the great acting masters decided to tag along. And thus three gnomes left the Forest of Veils for adventure.

My interpretation of these bits of information isn’t the only way to build this character. What class did your gnome choose? How did he come to worship Psomeira a minor and still mortal deity so far from home? Who was the relative that he was so close to? Which relative died? Was it her mentor?
