CRB is a repository of all the creative things that float through my mind about the RPG Pathfinder. Two major features are random character generation and building characters based on the god they worship. Anything that seems like it adds to the creative aspects of the game will pop up from time to time, including location descriptions, adventure ideas and even short stories. CRB won't just be my own creativity, it will open the floor to anyone who has an idea sparked by what I present to you.

Troubled Waters

The Wracked of Roqoloros

Water is often seen as the bringer of life; a symbol of healing and a resource any living being cannot survive without. But when that life-sustaining element is corrupted or tainted, you get death and disease. Among the foul outsiders of the lower planes, one being represents the corruption of water and that is Roqorolos, the Daemon Harbinger of castaways, fouled water, and oceans. Today we peek into the depths of his followers and present to you three possible sects of The Prince of the Wracked.

As always, let us imagine we are sitting at our theoretical gaming table. Our imaginary GM sets out the rules for the game that we will play. In this game, we are to make a follower of Roqorolos. The character does not need to be a divine caster, just a devotee of The Seadrinker. What character do you make?

For more information on Roqorolos
Roqorolos’s Pathfinder Wiki Page
Roqorolos’s Archives of Nethys Page

The Poisoned Well

The Daemon Harbinger Roqorolos serves Apollyon, the Horsemen of Pestilence. His domain over fouled water serves the purposes of his master. And the members of the Poisoned Well, in turn, serve the purposes of the Prince of the Wracked. They do so by befouling the water of settlements large and small to spread disease amongst the populace.

The members of this small sect consider themselves connoisseurs of waterborne contagions, both mundane and magical. Each settlement they seek to ravage is a chance for them to test their newest creations. Alchemists, Investigators, arcane casters of all kinds, and some of the most twisted druids on Golarion make up the core of these demented bringers of blight.

The Broken Bow

Those who find themselves stranded on small islands often fall to madness. These castaways can lose it enough to beg for the blessings of The Seadrinker. These damned souls please the daemon harbinger and The Broken Bow find favor from Roqorolos by stranding these unfortunate souls.

The Broken Bow is actually an extended family of weresharks and their skinwalker kin who occupy the Valashmai Sea off the Southern coast of Tian Xia. They hide in plain sight as movers of cargo – albeit often illicit things. They pick their targets when in port and then attack the chosen ship, sinking it and devouring most of its crew and passengers. They leave one sad soul alive and he usually wakes on some small uninhabited island.

The Lost

When one seeks the favor of Roqorolos, one must suffer his purview. The Lost is a group of oracles who take this suffering and solitude to the extreme in order to gain clarity from their master. Each member secludes themselves for seven years on an isolated island with no contact with other sentient beings. Every day they drink the salty ocean water in an attempt to poison their own bodies.

The Lost keep a shrine somewhere in The Shackles, where others of Roqorolos’ faithful come to find them for guidance. Although they are all considered oracles and conduits to the Daemon Harbinger, not all of them are of the oracle class. Shaman, druids, clerics, and even some sorcerers find a home among those who choose exile. The sect will accept any who can survive their seven years.

As corrupt as the befouled water of their lord are the followers of The Prince of the Wracked. Who is your disciple of Roqorolos? Why have they chosen to dedicate themselves to The Seadrinker? Where does their devotion to this Daemon Harbinger come from? Let me know in the comments.

Bringing The Walls Down Around Their Ears

Spite Bringers of Ahriman

The destruction of everything that mortals have built means that mortal cultists have to not only hate everything around them, but also themselves to follow this week’s divine being. Oddly for a creature so hell – or this case abbadon – bent on destruction our subject has created a great many terrible things. Today we look at Ahriman, the Daemon Harbinger of oblivion. Here are some sects that might have spawned from this foul being for use in your Golarion based games.

As always, let us imagine we are sitting at our theoretical gaming table. Our imaginary GM sets out the rules for the game that we will play. In this game, we are to make a follower of Ahriman. The character does not need to be a divine caster, just a devotee of The Lord of all Divs. What character do you make?

For more information on Ahriman
Ahriman’s Pathfinder Wiki Page
Ahriman’s Archives of Nethys Page

Hate Whsiperers

The followers of Ahriman especially love to foment discontent in areas where civilization is hanging on by a thread. The Hate Whisperers go out of their way to spread foul rumors in these areas so that peace and cohesion is never possible. They are currently very active in Nirmathas and Molthune, working to keep both sides at war with each other. They also have agents in Galt, The River Kingdoms, and Mendev.

Anyone can destroy with a sword, destroying with a word is a fine art all its own. Members of the Hate Whisperers are usually well spoken and convincing. Bards, rogues, investigators and others who can change the tone of region with a few utterances make up the bulk of the small sect. Like most cultists of Ahriman one does not seek out entrance into the Hate Whisperers, they find you if they think you are ready.

The Div-erence Makers

It is said that the servants of Ahriman were created by corrupting Jinn. This corruption transformed them from their elemental nature to far more evil and dangerous outsiders. Some of the Daemon Harbingers mortal followers take it upon themselves to ‘recruit’ more of these disgraced jinn to the cause.

All members of the sect are casters of some sort. Summoning and abjurations specialist in particular are sought after. Theses arcanists trap jinn on the mortal plane and force them to do the most terrible, horrific things they can imagine. The hope is that forcing the jinn to commit great evils will bring them closer to the fall and joining the ranks of Ahriman’s div.

Poisoned Faith

One of Ahriman’s follower’s favorite pastimes is making people lose their faith. Watching those touched by divine power fall from the graces of their deity is the sweetest of all conquests. The Daemon Harbinger doesn’t even care if these former faithful follow him instead, he actually prefers to instigate a form of atheism. Long ago there was a citadel dedicated to Ahriman in Thuvia around this location is where the masters of the divine fall – The Poisoned Faith – are situated.

This sect often pretends to be from Thuvia’s neighbor Rahadoum. The enlighten atheists are the perfect cover for this sect, hiding their nefarious deeds under the guise of the protection of humanity. Any can join this sect if the current membership can find a use for them, although they almost never recruit those they help fall from grace, as they enjoy watching their torment after losing their patron.

Let the hate flow through you, harness it, serve it. Who is your disciple of Ahriman? Why have they chosen to dedicate themselves to The Lord of all Divs? Where does their devotion to this Daemon Harbinger come from? Let me know in the comments.

Ch-ch-ch-changes

The Unholy of Llamolaek

The residents of Abbadon are nothing more than the embodiment of hate. Whereas the infernal seeks to control the world, and the abbsyal seek to cause chaos upon it, the Daemons seek to end it. This week we look at a former horseman of the apocalypse Llamolaek, the Daemon Harbinger of rebirth, rites of passage, and transformations. I present three possible sects you can use to populate your game.

As always, let us imagine we are sitting at our theoretical gaming table. Our imaginary GM sets out the rules for the game that we will play. In this game, we are to make a follower of Llamolaek. The character does not need to be a divine caster, just a devotee of The Ascended. What character do you make?

For more information on Llamolaek
Llamolaek’s Pathfinder Wiki Page

The Next Step

For some nature is perfect. For others nature could use a little nudge toward true perfection. The members of this sect of Llamolaek look to push nature to what they believe is perfection by using magic and science to manipulate it. Following the footsteps of the wizards who crafted such creatures as owlbears and even the hobgoblin race, The Next Step is never satisfied.

Members of this sect are mostly wizards and alchemists although the occasional cleric, arcanist, sorcerer, or investigator joins. The experiments they perform require, not only knowledge of magic or alchemy, but an understanding of anatomy. When adventurers come across never before seen magical beasts, it is a good bet that it is an escaped or loosed experiment of The Next Step.

The Beyonders

The Beyonders are a sect of worshipers of The Ascended who look past their current lives and seek to serve their master after a rebirth. They hope to bypass becoming the tortured souls which most of those who end up in Abbadon become. They wish to serve their Daemonic master by being reborn as Daemons after their death.

Only a handful of chosen can actually become Daemons, or so it is believed, thus the Beyonders have two sets of membership. There are those who may well and truly become servants of Llamolaek, and then there are the poor souls they trick into thinking they might. Because of the need for these other sacrifices, this sect is abnormally large for a cult of one of the Harbingers.

The Mothmen

Every little boy is told that one day he’ll be a man. Many cultures have an event or a time that denotes the transition from childhood to manhood. But not all little boys want to wait. Some of them want to be grown up so bad that they’ll do anything. And like moths to a flame they will jump at any chance to prove their manhood.

The Monthmen take advantage of these young men. They use their silver tongues and honeyed promises to get them to do things that they otherwise wouldn’t. Promises that certain deeds will ensure manhood lead these poor boys down the path of destruction. Rogues, bards, and other ne’er-do-wells make up the ranks of this sect. Most of their victims are left to face the consequences of their tainted rites of passage, although those who show promise may be taken in as apprentices to later become Mothmen of their own.

That which is old becomes new again to the followers of this dark being. Who is your disciple of Llamolaek? Why have they chosen to dedicate themselves to The Ascended? Where does their devotion to this Daemon Harbinger come from? Let me know in the comments.

Becoming The Beast

Throwbacks of Ealdeez

There is a beast that resides in all of us. Most of us can keep that snarling creature at bay, but some give in to the savagery. The Daemon Harbinger known as Ealdeez feeds off the rage in these people’s hearts. Those who give themselves over to the Harbinger of reversion, regression, and savage revenge give up any semblance of a civilized life. Today we look at three possible sects of the being known as The Beast Behind the Dream.

As always, let us imagine we are sitting at our theoretical gaming table. Our imaginary GM sets out the rules for the game that we will play. In this game, we are to make a follower of Ealdeez. The character does not need to be a divine caster, just a devotee of The Beast Behind the Dream. What character do you make?

Moonless Children

In one of the many secluded villages, off the beaten path in the River Kingdoms, reside some of the most inhospitable people you may ever meet. Outsiders are reviled and actively threatened. Most of the inhabitants of the region know to steer well away from the village, and rumors of missing travelers are common but unproved.

In truth this town’s entire populace are skinwalkers. They are descendants of mostly bat, rat, and wolf lycanthropes. They are also a cult of the Daemon Harbinger Eadleez who look to find a way to become full lyncanthropes so that they may truly feel the pull of their bestial blood.

The Lashing Tail

Among the lizardfolk of the Sodden Lands the aggressive Terwa Lords rile up their people to take back the land they believe was once theirs. They have convinced their people that their aggressive acts are from a place of vengeance for what has been stolen. They preach that the savagery they use is their birthright. They war and kill because it is how it should be.

Within the ranks of the Terwa Kings including some of the leading shamans, and kings themselves are members of a clutch of Eladeez devotees. These followers of the Beast Behind the Dream truly don’t care if they take back their land or not, all they want to see is the brutality of the event. Shaman, oracles, barbarians, hunters, and bloodragers make up the ranks of this sect within the great Terwa Lords.

Those Who Walk On Fours

Although most to the Hyena-folk who travel the deserts of Casmaron fall in line with their peers as worshipers of Lamashtu, some follow other beings of power. Those Who Walk On Fours are a small tribe of Gnolls who seek to become more like the Hyenas that they believe they came from. They refuse to walk on two legs, and they speak only in guttural growls and body language.

The tribe began and is still led by Fangscar, a grizzled battlerager who began to have disturbing visions. He saw himself constantly transforming back into a giant hyena over and over again. Through these dreams he began to believe that his people weren’t the creations of The Mother of Monsters but the evolution of the Hyenas that still roamed the deserts. He sought a way to become what he saw in his dreams and turned to Ealdeez to aid him in his regression, bringing over a number of other supplicants with him.

Like their patron the Deamon Harbinger’s followers are the epitome of savagery. Who is your disciple of Ealdeez? Why have they chosen to dedicate themselves to The Beast Behind the Dream? Where does their devotion come from? Let me know in the comments.

Reading Between the Lines

Supplicants of Braismois

As we reach the end of the month of October and our Halloween theme we have on last truly evil god. Whereas monsters, witches, and cults might be scary, nothing is quite as frightening as those humans who seek to take advantage of others. Today we take a look at Braismois, the Daemon Harbinger of broken deals, fine print, and unfair bargains.

As always, let us imagine we are sitting at our theoretical gaming table. Our imaginary GM sets out the rules for the game we will play. In this game, we are to make a follower of Braismois. The character does not need to be a divine caster, just a devotee of the Toxic Quill. What character do you make?

For more information on Braismois
Braismois’ Pathfinder Wiki Page
Braismois’ Archives of Nethys Page

The Black Weasels

Although they are considered a sect of Braismois worshipers, the Black Weasels are also a gang in the Ustalavic city of Leidstadt. This group of thugs specializes in protection rackets. They start with what seems like fair dealings and slowly but surely change the parameters of their contracts with local business. Eventually, the businesses are protecting themselves from the Black Weasels and not from imagined outside sources.

Membership in the Weasels is fairly easy to come by, it is staying alive afterward that is the hard part. Since few outside the gang know that they are actually a cult to the Daemon Harbinger of Broken Deals, those who join must either convert or perish. The leadership of the gang is made of three senior clerics of Braismois, although competition for these posts is fierce and only truly devious devotees keep their position – and their heads – for long.

The Brokerage

In Taldor when one wishes to make a formal contract the red tape is almost impossible to navigate. Even nobles keep an army of scribes and lawyers on hand to make sure that the ‘I’s are dotted and the ‘T’s are crossed. But not everyone likes to play fair in their deal making. When you absolutely need the best possible outcome for your contract you contact the Brokerage.

The Brokerage is a group of Braismois worshipers who are masters of legal jargon. They have insinuated themselves in the bloated bureaucracy of Taldan empire for decades. Although few know that they are devotees of a Daemon Harbinger, no one questions the masters of fine print as long as the job gets done.

The Coin Tenders

When you need money right away but cannot obtain it through legal means you can always borrow from the Coin Tenders. These usurers have taken up shop in the city of Magnimar although they will lend money almost anywhere on Avistan. These calculating merchants may seem cold and emotionless, but they are brutal and vicious when it comes to collecting their returns.

Membership into the Coin Tenders is by invitation only. The group has a way of knowing who has already been corrupted by the toxic touch of Braismois. Once a fellow worshiper is found, his business acumen and fortune is weighted carefully by other members of the sect. If he is deemed rich enough and cunning enough, he is offered a place among the money lenders.

When the letter of the law does not match the spirit, there you will find followers of The Toxic Quill. Who is your follower of Braismois? Why have they chosen to dedicate themselves to the Daemon Harbinger? Where does their devotion come from? Let me know in the comments.

The Devil You Know

Using Creatures From the Lower Planes

We have once again come upon my favorite season of the year, Halloween. Although I’m not a huge horror movie fan, the topic always comes up with my friends this time of year. I’m often reminded of dealings with the underworld during these conversations. Whether it is making a pact with a devil or unleashing the destructive power of a demon – accidently or not – the power of the hordes of the lower planes are nothing to be trifled with. So today I’d like to talk a little bit about these creatures of pure evil and their followers or, maybe better, patsies.

When looking at creatures of the lower planes we have quite a few to choose from. There are those who are specific to one of the bastions of evil and a few who can exist on more than one of the planes. The creatures that are specific to one of these planes are quite literally made up of the matter of these planes. They are evil souls in physical form. One of the reasons they cannot be raised when killed outside, except by wish or true resurrection, is because their body is their soul, so once destroyed there is no soul to recover for resurrection.

On each plane one type of creature rules supreme. Hell has its devils, Abbadon belongs to the daemons, and The Abyss writhes with hordes of demons. How do these creatures differ? When using these infernal and demonic creatures we need to determine motivation.

Devils, although hateful, need humanity. The Archdevil’s only wish is to corrupt the souls of mortals into a reflection of their own. Souls will eventually make their way to Hell, but if you create a hell on earth – orderly and corrupt – then the volume of souls that eventually make it to the plane of the devils will increase.

Demons and Daemons have the same goal although two different reasons for seeking it. Both sets of creatures look for nothing but the total annihilation of not just the world but the multiverse. The Daemons are more nihilists. These creatures have no passion, they just want things to end because they see no point in existence at all. Demons, however, are passion out of control, they glee in the destruction they cause on their way to their goal.

Outside of set up encounters as enemies, how can we use these purely evil beings in our games? Temptation. Temptation is probably the greatest tool for any of these beings. Devils as a whole are probably preeminent tempters, but that doesn’t mean that Deamons and Demons can’t be as well. Although the most common of these are made up of too much rage or spite to do well, the more powerful creatures of Abbadon – Deamon Harbingers – and The Abyss – Demon Lords  – understand how to use mortals to further their own causes.

When is the right time to put temptation on the path of your players? The right time is in those moments when the right way, the moral way, to solve a problem is the most difficult. The path to hell is paved with good intentions. Even if the goal of the actions is something good, accepting the help of an evil outsider, going the easy way because the right way is hard is the quickest path to corruption.

Beware of beings that don’t ask for immediate recompense for their assistance. Like a drug dealer, these creatures of personified evil will let you have a little taste before reeling you in. Even demons can use guile and the Demon Lord Shax is known to come in under the radar before devouring the souls of those who follow him.

Sometimes the slip up in making moral decisions isn’t on the heads of the party. You can force the players to think of their own morality though by giving them NPCs who have turned to dark powers for what may have originally been good reason. A mother who lost a child and in her grief was promised his resurrection by a dark power is one of many possible villains a player might meet. Encounters like this can show the players what may happen to them if they take the easy path, while pushing their own morality in the questions of whether to kill or console the grieving mother.

Whether you physically put these vile evil outsiders against your players, or have them face cultists or other corrupted souls, these creatures can be of great use to your game. Although pushing your players to fall or follow the path of evil at every turn can be overkill, judicious applications of temptation can work wonders. And sometimes the players just need to be the white knights vanquishing true evil.

Have you used evil outsiders in your games recently? How have you presented them to your players? What have your players reactions been? Have you used them in more than just toe-to-toe combat?

The Terrors of Technology

Deevotees of Cixyron

The DaemonHarbingers and their followers tend to be nihilists. So what makes a Deamon look to the future? What makes it want to foster invention and advancement? Usually destruction. Little is known about Cixyron and his followers, so today we are going to look at the Daemon Harbinger of electricity, gunpowder, and poisonous metals. You can see one such follower of the Furious Thunder in this week’s background write up, Brogurrt Thunderstomp.

As always, let us imagine we are sitting at our theoretical gaming table. Our imaginary GM sets out the rules for the game we will play. In this game, we are to make a follower Cixyron. The character does not need to be a divine caster, just a devotee of the Empyreal Lord. What character do you make?

For more information on Cixyron
Cixyron’s Pathfinder Wiki Page
Cixyron’s Archives of Nethys Page

The Mercury Brotherhood

The name of this sect is a bit misleading. The Mercury Brotherhood uses poisonous metals to open their minds to visions granted by Cixyron. Although alchemical mixtures of mercury are the most common method by which the Brothers poison themselves, they also use arsenic, lead, and even manganese. Some of the oracles in this sect go so far as to snort silver dust. These can be recognized by their blue-tinted skin.

The Mercury Brotherhood has no centralized organization. Members of the sect can be found living alone, in small groups, or dispersed among other cults of The Furious Thunder. When seeking or looking to interpret the will of Cixyron members of this sect are often sought out. Unlike oracles of many other Deamon Harbingers, Cixyron is more than willing to give away his secrets as he needs people invested in his domains to further his goals.

The Warmongers

The Deamon Harbingers of Abbadon, for the most part, each pay allegiance to one of the Horsemen. Cixyron for his part backs Szuriel, the Horseman of War. Cixyron sees technology as the next great step in waging better war. The sect known as the Warmongers seeks to push this agenda on Golarion.

The Warmongers include many inventors, craftsmen, and alchemists. However, the real power behind the sect are those who sell the machines of war to different factions. Whether it is governments, freedom fighters, or even monstrous hordes, the Warmongers want their weapons where they can do the most damage. Although they don’t have the means to mass produce them, outside of Alkenstar the Warmongers create the highest quantity of firearms.

The Lightning Harvesters

This very small sect, three people actually, seeks to harness the power of lightning and turn it into a weapon of war without the need of magic. These former members of the Technic League have seen what the fantastical items found among the ruins of the Numerian plains can do; how Automatons and even firearms like objects can fire lightning like energy. Corrupted by the teachings of Cixyron these three technomancers hope to uncover the means to recreate these weapons, and not just refurbish already existing armaments.

Those who invent, not to further knowledge but to further destruction, devotees of the Deamon Harbinger. Who is your follower of Cixyron? Why have they chosen to dedicate themselves to the Maiden of Haze and Whimsy? Where does their devotion come from? Let me know in the comments.

Law of the Jungle

Sects of the Daemon Anogetz

Revolution. Not generally the hallmark of evil, but the Daemon Harbinger Anogetz see it as his area of expertise along with coups and animal attacks. The Fated Fang considers himself a ruler among animals, the Alpha of the pack. Little is written on this inhabitant of Abbadon, and even less on his followers. Thus I put it to you, as we sit around our theoretical gaming table, we’re playing a game where all the characters must be worshipers of Anogetz. You do not need to be a divine casting class but your goals must align with the goals of the Daemon. What character would you make?

For what little information there is on Anogetz check these two places

The Packlords

In the river kingdoms, power comes to those who take it. The country is a free for all of anything goes—only the laws of those strong enough to enforce them prevail. In these lands, the Packlords seek to gain power in the name of their lord Anogetz. Each Packlord leads his own group of bandits in different territories within the river kingdom. They seek personal gain by any means necessary, and some have even gone so far as to overthrow the current lords of major regions.

Although the Packlords will band together in times of need, or if a plan calls for a larger group, there remains a constant struggle within the group. Despite the realization that they must work together, Anogetz demands that the best suited lead, whether this means the smartest or the strongest depends on the needs of the moment. The Packlords vie among each other in a constant attempt to dethrone whoever is currently the alpha. This usually means that concerted efforts among the lords are few and far between.

Each pack has its own hierarchy and the groups can range from as few as four to as many as twenty. Not everyone in the Packlord’s band will understand the true purpose of Anogetz, but the Deamon is not above whispering to newer members to test the lord of the pack. The Fated Fangs would not want those who lead his faithful to rest on their laurels.

The Grey Manes

The land of Galt has been set by constant revolution and many think it is because the governments, one after the next since the overthrow of the monarchy, have been corrupt. People look to the Grey Gardeners to prune the tree of liberty and make way for new leadership that meets the will of the people. What people fail to see is that within the Gardeners themselves is the reason for the continued strife. Hidden like a wolf in sheep’s clothing is the Grey Mane, worshipers of Anogetz.

The Grey Mane seeks to make Anogetz the one true religion within the realm of Galt and during each successive government they try to turn many of the ruling bodies toward the worship of their Daemon Lord.  Time and again however, their machinations fail and they are forced to use the guillotines to reset the playing field and begin anew. How the group stays so well hidden among the Grey Gardeners no one knows, but it may be because few, if any, know they are there in the first place.

The Ravagers

Although Ketephys has seen fit to help some were-creatures overcome their bestial nature, the followers of Anogetz revel in their bestial nature. The ravagers are a group of evil were-creatures that travel the length and breadth of Avistan. Their one goal is to remind humanity that just because they have formed civilization it does not mean they have reached the top of the food chain.

The activities of the Ravagers seem random to most folk, as animal attacks usually do. Each attack, however, is a well thought-out plan meant to instill the most fear among the people they seek to “enlighten”. Nightly raids that kill only one or two, so the town can watch their numbers slowly dwindle, is a common tactic. The ravagers rarely wipe a town or village out wholesale as they know they need leave some few to remember that what terror has befallen them.

A new edition to the god write ups are Paladin and Antipaladin codes. Since Anogetz is Neutral Evil he gets Antipaladins and here goes the code.

Antipaladin code

The beast’s territory is that which he can defend. I am the beast. I own what I can take and keep and nothing more. Those who cannot keep what they have were never meant for it, and it is mine by right

No man is a slave, except in their own heart.  No man is free but for the strength of his own will.  I will be no slave. I will harden my heart like armor, and sharpen my will like a sword, and let no man set easy who seeks to seat himself above me.

The beasts of the wild are unlike their domesticated brethren.  They see man as prey, when they take a man’s life, it reminds other men of their place in the world.  This is as it should be

A weak leader is prey to a strong man. A foolish leader is prey to a smart man. An unpopular leader is prey to a man with allies.  A leader who is prey is no leader at all.
