CRB is a repository of all the creative things that float through my mind about the RPG Pathfinder. Two major features are random character generation and building characters based on the god they worship. Anything that seems like it adds to the creative aspects of the game will pop up from time to time, including location descriptions, adventure ideas and even short stories. CRB won't just be my own creativity, it will open the floor to anyone who has an idea sparked by what I present to you.

Character 92 - Herlish Insigal

This week’s character started out as just a skinwalker descended from wererats with a good dexterity. The oddities came when we realized he has both older and younger half-orc half-siblings as well as older and younger full blooded siblings. We added to that growing up in the mountains of Nex, of which there are two ranges, where pretty much everything outside of the magically protected major cities is a blasted wasteland. So with this odd mixture of background bits and dexterity with wisdom as the next follow up stat, I decided to go with the ranger class this week.

Herlish Insigal

The story of Herlish really starts with the story of his mother. She was a woman with little to no luck throughout her life. She was born in Lastwall, a place at constant war with the orcs of the Hold of Belzken. Unmarried, she bore a half-orc child, although she had never had any untoward contact with any of the orc raiders. It is believed that one of the many half-orc warriors who come to Lastwall to live down their heritage is the father but Anka never said and fled the frontier country with her child.

She made her way to Absalom and managed to secure a husband despite having a bastard half-orc child. The man was a gruff former soldier who sold his services to any who would hire. This included a merchant who was traveling to far off Nex. So Herlish’s father uprooted his family and they took the long trip across the inner sea to Nex, and from its capital Qauntium to the city of the fleshforgers, Ecanus.

Ecanus was where Herlish was born, although his parents had already spawned one boy child. Herlish was a twitchy child and as he grew up he was constantly bullied for his nervous reactions. The young boy found solace in watching all the bizarre creation going around him. Although he could never quite grasp how these oddities were made, he cherished the art of creation and many of craftspeople would show him how they made their ideas come to life.

Ecanus was also a dangerous place, and the merchant his father worked for did volatile, although not illicit, work. When you buy and sell living creatures crafted by magic, accidents are bound to happen. Some of the beasts shattered their bonds on the small estate of the merchant and sent his staff and their families running. Herlish’s father stood firm in protecting his charge but fell in the battle, leaving Anka with now four children, Herlish’s younger sister having only recently been born.

The fleshforges often require living flesh to create the monsters that are birthed from the vats. Although many of these are unintelligent animals or horrors not worth mentioning, some unscrupulous crafters will use sentient creatures to fuel their creations. In Nex slavery is legal and the fleshforgers will often buy slaves just for these purposes. But sometimes those slaves escape.

Orc and half-orc were often used as stock for these experiments because of their durability. Those that escaped started a secret underground based out of the Barrier Wall mountains to help others avoid the horrific fate of being immersed in the vats. Herlish’s older sister Alysse got herself involved with these freedom fighters and dragged her younger half-sibling along.

Since Herlish was human he could pass more easily among the oppressors, and he did this willingly, flaunting the law for his sister and loving every minute of it. The young man was adept at keeping to the shadows although not every excursion was without incident. Herlish was slowly learning the tricks to battling the creations of the fleshforgers.

Some of the beings they rescued were already changed by preparation rituals or even just proximity to magical and alchemical substances. But they were not the only ones that saw a change come over them. Whether it came from his mother or father’s side he didn’t know, but Herlish’s found the ability to alter his own shape. He was able to take on aspects of a rodent and minor abilities attributed to wererats, of whom he realized he was probably kin.

As things became more serious Herlish and his older sister went to their mother and got her to leave the city and take up residence in the stronghold in the mountains that the rebels were using. There she married yet again, a half-orc with some mutations due to experimentation. She bore one last child, another half-orc bringing her brood to a total of five children.

Herlish and his sister still fight the good fight and their younger brother seems eager to join when he comes of age. Life may not be easy for the odd family but they’re still happy.

What did you do with your skinwalker? What class did his background dictate for him? Who did he have both a younger and older half-sibling? What law or oath did he break?

Money Is the Root of All Evil

Followers of Mammon

Mammon, Hell’s accountant; the Archdevil of Avarice, watchfulness and wealth.  As the ruler of the third level of hell, Mammon is just under Dispater and Asmodeus himself in terms of power and influence. There is some information on his mortal high priestess Lady Kaltessa Iyis of Isger but little else is known of the Archdevil’s worshipers. Overlooked are his ties to Thassilon and the fact he belongs to the Kobold Pantheon as well. So who are the other earthly followers of Mammon and what are his cults like?

The Coin Tenders

Although most people see Cheliax as the land of Asmodeus, in truth Daibolism is the state belief system. Yes Asmodeus is by far the archdevil with the largest following, and the rest of the Golarion sees Cheliax as his domain. However,  the other Archdevils do have their own followers and cults within the country. Mammon has found a home among the money crunchers of the Land of the Devils. His most dedicated supplicants call themselves The Coin Tenders.

The Coin Tenders know that Mammon will never have enough power to oust Asmodeus, but he does have his sights set on the realm above his: the iron city of Dis. The tenders move money around like no one else can and they also  know how to make money disappear. The tenders have been preparing for war since the house of Thrune took control. They’ve not only been using the funds to further Mammon’s goals within the borders of Cheliax, but have also been funneling money to Isger to aid Lady Iyis’ endeavors as well.

The Hoarders

What’s mine is mine, and what’s your is mine, that is the motto of The Hoarders of Korvosa. Most people think that the Otyughs are the only things to worry about in the sewers Korvosa, but in the secret tunnels in the darkest corners live the wererats that comprise The Hoarders. Unlike many sane people, each of the members of the group have voluntarily chosen to become a wererat. In gaining the power that comes with being a Lycnathrope they also dedicate themselves to greed and Mammon.

The founder of The Hoarders was a street kid who grew to be a priest in the church of Asmodeus. He had an overwhelming need to collect that which he never had when he was growing up and his greed eventually led him to become a heretic. Mammon called to him and promised him power, but in return he needed to prove his loyalty. His act of dedication was to take on the form of Mammon’s chosen animal, the rat.

The Hoarders are now one of the leading groups of thieves in all of Korvosa, except no one knows about them. Theft for them is not so much about stealing as it is about owning. They don’t just take money they take items that are important to the people who own them, especially worshipers of Asmodeus. Each Hoarder is hand picked and offered the chance to join. They must choose the change willingly, or die by denying it.

Kobold Redscales

This cult of Mammon-worshiping koblods actually has no real name, although outsiders call them by the color of their scales. These kobolds are far more methodical and single-minded than even their other kin in Adoran. Their goal is material wealth but they succeed at this goal through constant toil. Their dedication sees them rise early and bed late filling all of their intervening time with work.

The Redscales are led by a high priestess of Mammon who uses her abilities to aid in the Kobold’s work day, and their collection of gems and precious metals. Unlike other kobolds this group does not take slaves, the work they do is part of their worship of the Open Palm. Also like many kobolds the Redscales make use of many traps to guard their treasure. Second only to the high priestess are the divine trapsmiths, and being posted to watch is considered one of the greatest honors.

Like many Devils, Mammon’s worship can grow in even the strangest places. These three cults are just a few examples of those who might follow the Lord of the Second.

Perhaps the Hoarders or the Coin Tenders will make an appearance in your game, or maybe I’ve sparked some ideas for your use of the Ardent Prince.
